Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there two more sentences than you need.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

When I was a kid, I felt anxious about the question, because I never had a good answer. Adults always seemed terribly disappointed that I wasn’t dreaming of becoming something grand or heroic, like a filmmaker or an astronaut.

In college, I finally realized that I didn’t want to be one thing. I wanted to do many things. So I found a workaround: I became an organizational psychologist. My job is to fix other people’s jobs. I get to experience them indirectly—I’ve gotten to explore how filmmakers blaze new trails(开创先河)and how astronauts build trust.   【小题1】

My first complaint with the question is that it forces kids to define themselves in terms work. When you’re asked what you want to be when you grow up, it’s not socially acceptable say, “A father,” or, “A mother,” let alone, “A person of integrity(诚实正直)”. This might be of the reasons many parents say their most important value for their children is to car about others, yet their kids believe that top value is success. 【小题2】

The second problem is the implication that there is one calling(使命感) out the everyone. Although having a calling can be a source of joy, research shows that search one leaves students felling lost and confused. And even if you’re lucky enough to stum a calling, it might not be a viable(切实可行的) career. My colleagues and I have form callings often go unanswered: 【小题3】

If you manage to overcome those obstacles, there is a third hurdle: Careers rarely your childhood dreams. In one study, looking for the ideal job left college seniors feeling more anxious, stressed, overwhelmed and depressed throughout the process satisfied with the outcome.   【小题4】 Sure, you might be a little less excited to take it, but on average you end up more productive and less likely to quit.

I’m all for encouraging youngsters to aim high and dream big. But take it who studies work for a living: those aspirations should be bigger than work . As they want to be leads them to claim a career identity they might never want invite them to think about what kind of person they want to be -- and about things they might want to do.

A.Many career passions don’t pay the bills, and many of us just don’t have the talent.
B.Extensive evidence shows that instead of painting a rosy picture of a job, you’re better off having a realistic preview of what it’s really like.
C.People who graduate from college during a recession(经济衰退) are more satisfied with their work three decades later.
D.I have become convinced that asking youngsters what they want to be does them harm.
E.When we define ourselves by our jobs, our worth depends on what we achieve.

Now most of the workers work from 9 am to 5 pm. However, according to the global Internet survey done by the UK Sleep Council, the siesta (午睡)was the right idea all along. The UK Sleep Council called on the country's bosses to end nine-to-five working in favor of more flexible hours. They believe what would really increase the workers' productivity is a nice afternoon nap, rather than those bonuses.

Forty-one percent of the 12,000 people who responded to the council's survey said they were most productive in the morning, while 38 percent said they hit their stride in the evening. "This means most of them cannot fully pay attention to what they do in the middle of the day," said sleep expert Dr. Chris Idzikowskii. "We must conclude from this survey that the traditional nine-to-five working day does not suit most workers." He suggested that allowing workers to follow their natural sleeping habits would actually benefit employers by allowing them to expand their working hours and be more productive.

Fortunately, being a college lecturer, I don't have to go to work everyday. I only work three days a week, but during the three days I work really long hours and have no time for a little siesta. I'm usually so tired and sleepy in the afternoon, which really affects the vitality (活力)of my classes.

I think Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea is worthwhile. When people have flexible working hours they could reach their highest productivity. On top of that, flexible working hours mean that people don't have to work all at the same time. That way we could avoid traffic jams. Therefore, it's really killing two birds with one stone!

Sometimes when it feels like things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place. This is exactly the case for Holly Smith, 34, from Surrey, when she lost her job two years ago.

At the beginning of 2020, Holly was working as a general manager for a small independent bakery business in Surrey. She had been there six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she had to pack up her bags and leave. Being made redundant came as a huge shock for her and she panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time.

Holly didn’t know where to turn initially, but she was determined to find a silver lining, so she picked up a paintbrush and began to paint. Holly painted a portrait of her parent’s dog, a Spinone Italiano named Bailey, and shared the image online. Straight after, a few friends requested their own pet paintings and soon her career took off.

Holly named her business Holly & Murphy, after her special five-year-old cocker spaniel, Murphy. She is often at her most creative when she’s floating on water, together with her furry companion in her boat. She combines watercolour paints and pencils to bring dogs’ faces to life. A small painting usually takes two to three days to complete. Customers love how she captures their pet’s personality in great detail. Some of the most memorable paintings she has been asked to do are of dogs that have passed away. Her dog portraits start at £295 and can cost up to £595.

“When it first happened, it felt like the end of the world,” Holly, a current full-time painter and business owner, told The Mirror, “but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And I’m so grateful to have a job that I love.”
