A Faithful (忠实的) Dog

More than seven hundred years ago, the Prince of Wales had a very big and brave dog called Gelert.

One day the Prince wanted to go hunting (打猎) with his men. He told his dog to stay at home and look after his baby son. The baby was in a wooden cradle (摇篮), which was like a small bed.

When the Prince came back from hunting, Gelert ran out to meet his master. He wagged (摇) his tail (尾巴) and jumped up to put his paws (手爪) on the Prince's chest. Then the Prince saw the blood (血) on Gelert's jaws (颚) and head.

"What have you done?" the Prince said. He rushed into his house and looked for his baby son. The cradle was lying on its side on the floor. The clothes were torn and there was blood on them.

"So you have killed my son?" the Prince said angrily. "You unfaithful dog!" He took out his sword (剑) and killed the dog. Just as Gelert was dying, he managed (设法) to bark. Then the Prince heard a baby call to the dog.

The Prince ran out of the house and saw his son lying on the ground unhurt (没受伤). Near him was a dead wolf. Then the Prince knew that Gelert had defended (保卫) the baby and killed the wolf.

The Prince ran back into the house but he was too late. Gelert was dead. The Prince was very sad indeed. Tears ran down his face when he realized he had killed his faithful friend. The Prince carried the body of his brave dog to the top of a mountain and buried (埋葬) him there. After this, the Prince never smiled again. Every morning at dawn, he walked up the mountain and stood by the dog's grave for a few minutes.

If you go to Mount Snowdon in Wales, people will show you where Gelert is buried. There is a sign by his grave. It reminds people of a brave and faithful dog.

Jane Goodall is best known for her 26-year study of the chimps in the wild. There, she made several revolutionary discoveries that made her one of the greatest field scientists of the 20th century.

Born in London in 1934, the expectations for Jane were standard for the time: a marriage to a nice man, followed by a few children. Fortunately, her mother never discouraged (劝阻, 使气馁) her interests: animals and the natural world. Once her mother discovered that little Jane had brought a handful of worms (幼虫) to bed; rather than screaming, she explained that her new little friends needed the soil to live, and together, they took them back to the garden.

Jane was a bookworm who admired Doctor Dolittle and loved the Tarzan novels. Reading did its usual quiet but life-changing thing: Jane developed a dream to go to Africa and live among the wild animals.

Jane realized her dream on July 14, 1960 when she arrived at Gombe Stream Game Reserve to study the chimps. However, for two months, the chimps escaped when they heard her coming. The only thing she saw was the back of a chimp, running away from her.

“The more I thought of the task I had set myself, the more discouraged I became,” Jane wrote in her first book, In the Shadow of Man.

Eventually, she became familiar with a male chimp and his big family. She observed them kiss, hug, pat each other on the back, shake their fingers at each other. She watched them act very human-like.

One day, moving quietly through the jungle, Jane saw the male chimp sit beside a large termite mound (白蚁土堆). He kept taking small braches from trees and putting them in the holes to fish the ants.

In any case, Jane’s discovery became the talk of the scientific world. Harvard’s Stephen Jay Gould observed, “We must now re-think what the words ‘tool’ (工具) and ‘man’ mean or accept chimps as humans.”

Every day since early July, 2018, Tiffany Wong has painted a small watercolor of one woman and then shared the painting on Instagram, providing background information about each woman. Wong started the project to give more people a chance to learn about the different roles of women in society and history. “We don’t really get to learn about them in our school as much,” Wong said. “I wanted to make women’s history more available for people so that they wouldn’t have to do the research.”

Wong's interest in women’s history started young. As a child in California, she read books about women, including scientist Barbara McClintock, doctor Elizabeth Blackwell and other fields.

The idea to develop her own women’s history project was inspired in part by a free course through Harvard X, Harvard University’s developer of online courses. Wong has worked there for the past five years after learning international education policy from the university. The Schlesinger Library provided another inspiration for Wong. In 2018, she visited the library’s 75th-anniversary exhibit, which told women’s stories through 75 documents and objects.

As an artist since childhood, Wong decided her project would include both paintings and research about women. “The written part of the post often takes longer than the painting,” Wong said. Whenever possible, she uses original sources and quotes, often referring to papers and other documents.

None of the paintings includes the women’s facial features, a style that makes the paintings easier to do, while giving people an opportunity to see themselves in the image. “I wanted something open,” Wong said. “I wanted people to feel like they could also be these people.”

Her subjects occasionally notice her posts. In February, Wong wrote about the career of Merritt Moore, a physicist and dancer with an undergraduate degree from Harvard. Moore shared the post with her own Instagram followers and left a comment for Wong.

“Wow! I’m so touched! Thank you! I love this!” Moore wrote.

In January 2017, I left a 30-year career in radio to find a new path. Fear, doubt, and anxiety filled my life at that time. I had no idea where life was going to take me.

Anything new in life can be exciting, but it can also come with anxiety. I was beginning a new career with little experience. The language on the ramp(舷梯)was foreign to me. What is involved with a “turn” (a plane being downloaded and loaded) was foreign to me. All of the excitement I had about this job on the first day was slowly changing to fear and doubt by week three.

After two weeks in the classroom, it was time for training on the ramp. On my first day as a trainee, I was partnered with a man named Fernando. My job was zone assist. A zone assist is usually at the back of the plane, bringing the belt loader(带式行李装载机)to the aircraft, unloading the back bins(箱子), servicing the drinking water, and wing walking at a push(紧急时). I was 48 years old at the time and had been without extreme physical activity since high school, so I was about to hit the ramp for the first time in extremely hot conditions.

Another deep fear I had, other than hurting myself, was damaging an airplane. Granted, things happen and we’re human. But making a mistake and damaging a plane that could lead to a delay or taking it out of service would be a disaster for a ramp agent. With that in mind, I was so nervous driving the belt loader up the airplane.

Fernando and I did eight turns that day. I don’t remember how many bags I downloaded. Eventually, I got through the day, tired and sore afterwards. Looking at the schedule for the next day, I believed I would do it better.

【小题2】Which of the following is NOT the reason why the author nearly hit the ramp?
A.His physical condition.B.His carelessness.

【小题3】What made the author nervous at work?
A.Having an old partner.B.Being too tired.
C.Hurting himself.D.Damaging the plane.
【小题4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author would continue his new job.B.The author would change his job.
C.The author would have a higher salary.D.The author would get a promotion
