Educators in China have long struggled with the problem of overworked schoolchildren. Attempts to do away with some test oriented teaching often face resistance from parents, who worry that their offspring could lose out in the race to get into a good university. Some officials are taking a new approach. In the south-western province of Yunnan, they have not only revised the PE( Physical Education) test in the zhongkao, an examination for entrance to senior secondary school. They have also given it the same grades in the exam as all-important subjects like maths and Chinese. Eight provinces have joined Yunnan too.

These reforms are in response to demands by the central government for a more well-rounded approach to education. In 2017 primary and secondary schools were ordered to hire only specialists to teach PE and art. In October they were directed to organize daily gym classes, and now to include PE and art in the zhongkao. The government says it wants to foster a “lifelong habit of exercise” .

The government worries about how many youngsters are in poor shape. In 2017 officials in Guangzhou found that only 2.6% of local children were in “excellent” health. Half of pupils surveyed there had myopia(近视). Today one in five Chinese children is overweight, up from just one in 20 in 1995. The state news agency, Xinhua, summed it up with a headline: “Why good times produce weak children”.

But parents do not want their children to be distracted from their books. They are used to pupils getting full marks in PE with hardly any effort, partly because examiners have tended to grade generously to avoid “unfairly” punishing hard-working students, says Mr Zhu. Schools often cancel PE and art classes in favour of other subjects. This will change with the new reforms. But parents are already complaining that PE will be just one more source of stress. Mr Zhu sighs over the use of exam pressure to get people’s attention. Still, he hopes it is a giant leap towards greater fitness.

In most developed countries the government provides free education for children because it realizes that educated citizens are useful to the country in their later life. Most countries also have private (私立的)education. This means that parents can pay to send their children to certain schools. People who agree with this system say that it gives parents a larger choice of schools. Other people think that private schools give the children who go to them an unfair advantage over other children.
At the age of three, many children go to nursery school. Two or three years later, they enter a primary school. At the age of 11 they go to a secondary school. Then they may have a chance .of continuing their studies at a university or college.
Universities and colleges are places where some young people go to continue their education after leaving school. Most university students study one main subject, though they may also study a number of others. Teaching is usually by lectures, or by discussions between a lecturer and students.
Most students stay at university for three or four years. At the end of that, they take an examination. If they pass, they receive their Bachelor’s degree, usually a BA, which is short for Bachelor of Arts, or a BS for Bachelor of Science. Some students study for several more years in order to get higher degree, such as a MA or a PhD
Most university courses don’t train students to do a certain job. Colleges, on the other hand, usually teach skills which enable students to follow a career(职业), such as clothing design, or business studies.

As a Fulbright(富布莱特法案基金)scholar at Yale, I wanted very much to get some individual help from some famous professors, but their office-hours were only once a week and there were always students waiting outside. At first, I was too polite to get their help. Then I realized that Chinese politeness does not work in this society. I needed to be aggressive to get what I wanted. I also noticed that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguistic feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal verbs-far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said: “this is my personal opinion and it could be wrong. It would be a good idea if you could read the book I mentioned the other day.” Or,“ You may find the book I recommended helpful.” Or,“You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.” When making comments on students’ performances, the professor usually said:” It might have been much clearer if you had taken in some of the ideas we discussed earlier this semester.”

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct directions. Therefore students always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how annoyed they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than those of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they were sure about it. That is why they make far more certain statement than American students. That is why Chinese students find it difficult to use modal verbs because the function of modal verbs is to provide room for negotiation and different ideas.
