When I was seven, I found a watch while walking down the hallway of my school. The watch was expensive-looking, set with gold. As I picked it up, greedy (贪欲) suddenly came over me, and instead of turning it into the office like I should have, I became the owner of the watch.

When I got home from school, I found Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. Thinking that she would be impressed, I held out my prize for her to see with a feeling of excitement and pride. Mom, however, was far from impressed. Instead, she was angry at her son keeping the watch instead of turning it in. Mom then ordered me to go straight back to school and take the watch to someone at the office. I started to argue, but after taking a good look at the expression on Mom’s face, I realized that would get me nowhere. There was nothing left for me to do but obey (服从).

I have to admit, I was rather angry with Mom for making me give up the watch. I felt that it was justly mine since I was the one who had found it. Yes, I knew she was right, but greed had forced me to keep the watch, and now pride wouldn’t allow me to admit that I had done something wrong. But time passed, and I forgot all about the lesson that I learned from the watch until fourteen years later.

While I was attending college, I had managed to get a job at a Walmart pushing carts off the parking lot. One morning, I found a checkbook (支票簿) that had been left in a shopping cart. Quickly, I took it to the customers service desk and gave it to the employee there so that the customer who had lost it could pick it up.

As a senior teacher in primary school, I deal with countless lovely children to help them learn and live, especially to help children deal with their parents. My experience over the years tells me not to be impatient in case of trouble. Think twice before you act. We must firmly believe that children have a kind heart.

The following is a real big story that happened in my class not long ago.

Katie was in trouble. She was such a sweet kid. A third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn't imagine why she had made her parents so angry. Her parents complained to me anxiously and urgently asked me to tell the truth and give her a lesson.

It seemed that Katie had been spending a lot of money in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great home-made lunch every day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation. I comforted them and thought about how to get in touch with Katie.

So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you spending much money on lunch, Katie? What happened to your home-made lunch?” I asked. “I lost it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track, “No. I just lost it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare (瞪眼看) at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.

“Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one.” The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小狗雕像) on the wall. “Do you collect dogs?” the little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. “Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No boy, I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

A merchant(商人)sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest man . The young man wandered through the desert for a long time until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man the young man was looking for.

In the castle, he saw merchants coming and going, people talking in the corners and a small band playing beautiful music. There was a table with different kinds of delicious foods on it. The wise man talked to everybody. The young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him to talk to the wise man.

The wise man listened carefully to the reason for the young man’s visit. He told the young man that at that moment he had no time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He suggested that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours. “ However, I want to ask you a favour,” he added. He handed the young man a spoon, into which he put two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill.”

The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to see the wise man. “So,” asked the wise man , “did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows? Did you see the garden that the best gardeners in our country took ten years to build? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?”

Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the two drops of oil as the wise man had told him.

“Go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can’t trust a man if you don’t know his house.”
