Love without boundaries
When most people hear the word “holiday”, they picture sunny beaches and mountain top resorts. But for Dr. John Ness, a plastic surgeon based in Minneapolis, USA, “holiday” 【小题1】 (consist) of volunteer missions to China, 【小题2】 he repairs the cleft lips and palates (唇腭裂) of children at the orphanage or those who could not otherwise afford surgery.
Dr. Ness commits one week of holiday time per year 【小题3】 similar service trips. “ I 【小题4】
(raise) to make volunteering part of my life,” he said. “The first time I can remember volunteering was singing songs at the local nursing home when I was young. I was aware of the idea that we all have gifts that we can use 【小题5】 (benefit) someone who has less.”
The experience inspired a lifelong passion for Dr. Ness, who has now participated in around 15 surgical missions with a number of organizations. When he entered the “Why I Volunteer Photo Contest.” he earned great respect and support. 【小题6】 (receive) over 600 likes online, Dr. Ness’ incredible story easily won the competition.
Although Dr Ness always works 12-14 hours a day on “holiday” to repair the 【小题7】 (break) smiles of orphans, he considers 【小题8】 worthwhile to give them a new chance to join a forever family. Looking after orphans, he believes, is something anyone can do. “Many people did want to help, but they were worried 【小题9】 they didn’t have any special skills for the job”, Dr. Ness recalled,“ if you can hold and love a sick child for a day or two while he is recovering from a serious illness, then you already have a special skill. He truly hopes that others will ask themselves 【小题10】 they can do to help the less fortunate around themselves. Everyone can make a difference with love.
