It’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.

According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.

Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.

Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust (废气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.

To the cheering of taxi drivers and the honking of horns, the comedian and actor Eddie Izzard ran into London yesterday to complete his 43rd marathon in 52 days. In total he had covered 1,100 miles. His 43 marathons were in aid of the charity Sports Relief, which raises money for the poor all over the world. So far Izzard has raised more than £200,000.

Fighting blisters (水疱) that have caused the nails on his smaller toes to fall off, he ran up The Mall and into Trafalgar Square, where he had started 7.5 weeks ago. In finishing he proved what many thought was an impossible task: that a 47-year-old comedian with no sporting experience could do something a top athlete might find difficult.

After only six weeks’ training he started out on a journey that would take him to every corner of the British Isles. “The first three weeks were the hardest,” he said. The non-stop pressure on his body made him unable to sleep at night and he would wake exhausted with “blisters on top of blisters”.

But the people he met along the way cheered him up. “People stopped their cars and cheered, they gave me money and food.” More than 500,000 people “followed” the comedian, in a different sense, on Twitter. Running into London he looked lean and muscular. “Everyone says my legs look very good but I thought they looked quite good beforehand,” he said.

Simon Blease, 51, a sports doctor and mountain runner who has been following his progress, was waiting on Tower Bridge. “I didn’t think he could do it,” he said. “Like a lot of people I thought he would have a good try, but his body would break down. Someone with so little training. I find it extraordinary that he has done it.”

Asked what he had gained, Izzard said “I know now I can do that. Sport is one of those words that stopped being part of my life when I was about 14. Sporting success was not something I ever associated myself with.” He now plans to continue jogging and hopes to inspire others into sport.

In 15 years, parkrun has grown from one event in London to 1,800 free, weekly, timed 5km runs around the world. Here are our favorites…

BUSHY PARK, RICHMOND, LONDON

Before 2004, no one had heard of parkrun. But thanks to Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE, on 2 October that year, the royal park held its first free run event. Starting with just 13 runners on its first day, the part-grassy, part-footpath route now holds the UK’s record number of entrants for a parkrun. It’s pretty fast and flat and the scenery doesn’t disappoint either.

PORTRUSH, NORTHERN IRELAND

When we say off the beaten track, we mean it. That’s because there’s not a footpath, track or even a park in sight-just sand. Bounding down a beach may be a bit of a killer workout for your calves, but it certainly offers a unique experience, completing 5km with the backdrop of waves crashing against the shore and a mind-blowing view of Dunluce Castle and the Giants Causeway.

ASHTON COURT, BRISTOL, ENGLAND

If you’re a bit of a whizz when it comes to a 5km, this might be just the challenge you’re looking for. With a 2.5 km uphill start, this will really get those legs and lungs working hard. You’ll be rewarded at the turning point with fantastic views over Bristol and the promise of a downhill stretch back to the finish. The route runs along tarmac and stone paths, making the course suitable all year round.

KANGAROO ISLAND, AUSTRALIA

It’s there in the title — wildlife is buult right in. Travelling down under this year? Head to Australia’s third-largest island for a 5km adventure trail. This jaw-dropping out-and-back course follows footpaths along the coastline, so you should be able to hop to the finish line in pretty good time, as long as you don’t get distracted by the wallabies, koalas, seals and kangaroos. Just allow time to get there, as it’s a 45-minute ferry ride from the mainland port of Cape Jervis.

A.Warming up exercise is required.B.The parkrun is remotely located in the mainland.
C.The distance is beyond the standard 5km.D.It takes time to reach the island via boat.
【小题3】What do these parkruns have in common?
