As a self-described military brat (小家伙) , Kathryn Miller has always loved the armed forces. In the summer of 2020, Miller teamed up with her friend Kailyn Rowland to create a documentary for National History Day, a nonprofit organization that holds an annual contest for students. Their documentary, Women at West Point: Breaking Barriers of the Long Gray Line, tells the story of the first women who graduated from West Point in 1980.

In March, Miller and Rowland were announced to have been selected for a Special Recognition of Champions Award as “individuals who have made exceptional contributions to women in the Army” “What we did was never for an award or for recognition; it was about sharing the story of these women, so to receive the award was really special,” Miller said.

Miller and Rowland spent countless hours working on their documentary, reaching out to the 62 women of the class of 1980 and interviewing more than 25 percent of them. “This was hours and hours of research and interviews,” Miller said. “We did Face Times with the women, we met in person, we called them, and so we had so much information, so many news articles going back 40 years. “Miller, whose mom was a veteran (老兵) and dad was a teacher at the United States Military Academy, lived in West Point as a child. “I always saw female cadets (学员) , and it always seemed like, ‘Oh, boys and girls, that’s completely normal, ‘so it was such a shock to me when I realized that girls didn’t always have that opportunity. “While making this documentary, Miller also realized her love for sharing other people’s stories. “I came to realize how much power there is in getting the story right, “she said, “And we were able to experience the gratitude from these women for sharing their stories and showing them that the younger generation really appreciates the doors they opened for us.

Andrea Speranza wanted to be a firefighter long before she had the right word for her wish. After one childhood adventure at a construction site ended with a brake lever inserted in her leg, and an emergency call to the fire department, she found herself in amazement. “As they gave basic medical treatment to me, I thought they help everybody and they can do anything,” says the now 52-year-old from Toronto, Canada.

In 2000, Speranza fulfilled her dream of becoming a firefighter, joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as fulfilling as she imagined it would be, except for one thing: she still hadn’t seen another woman in her role, not in a magazine, not on television, not in real life. Even today, less than five percent of firefighters in Canada are women. Speranza decided that she wanted to help young women see that they, too, could have a career like hers.

The result is Camp Courage, a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting, and police work. In 2006, Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, recruiting(招募) attendees through advertising in schools and recreation centres. Over the course of eight days, the girls discover the ins and outs of being first responders: learning how to put out fires, delivering first aid and even using the jaws of life on a car.

Camp Courage now runs one session every year in Halifax and is free to attend. Hundreds of girls have now passed through Camp Courage, and 36 percent are doing exactly what Speranza hoped they would: working as first responders across the country.

“I used to think that it’s awesome that I can be a firefighter and save all these people,”

Speranza says with a smile. But the opportunity to recruit other girls to save lives alongside her is what really keeps her going. “It’s not even measurable.”

The No. 10 he wore on his jersey became closely associated with him, as it also had with Pele, the Brazilian legend (传奇)with whom Maradona was regularly paired as the best of all time.

Maradona died of heart attack two weeks after being released from a hospital. His sudden death saddened the world.

As a footballer, he appealed to fans around the world over a two-decade career with an amazing style of play that was all his own.

Maradona once said he was given a soccer ball soon after he could run.

“I was 3 years old and I slept hugging that ball all night,“ he said.

Maradona won titles at home and abroad, playing in the early 1980s for Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors before moving on to Spanish and Italian clubs. His crowning achievement came at the 1986 World Cup, captaining Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the final and decisive in a 2-1 victory against England in a tight quarterfinal match.

In fact, his "Hand of God" goal against England during the 1986 World Cup is one of the most famous moments in soccer history.

Maradona was tracking down a ball and trickily used his hand to punch it over the goalkeeper into the net—while pretending his hand never actually touched it. His acting job worked and the goal counted!

“I am Maradona, who makes goals, who makes mistakes. I can take it all, I have shoulders big enough to fight with everybody, Maradona once said.

Five years ago, it would have been more likely that I’d be turning out for Chelsea Football Club than attending the RHS Chelsea flower show, let alone building a garden there. As a promising young footballer, gardening was not part of my vocabulary.

It was after a disaster that I found gardening to be a form of relief. The night of 14 June, 2017 changed my life forever. The Grenfell Tower fire took the lives of 72 people. Living nearby, I was completely broken. I took to the streets to be among others in my attempt to find some comfort or peace of mind. What I encountered changed my attitude entirely.

With no thought or plan, I channelled my energy into greening and beautifying a deserted, unloved community space. I honestly didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but that didn’t matter. I journeyed to every garden centre within reach, asking for plants to be donated to our newly-developed community space. The response was strong. People would walk past and share a smile or some conversation. Phone numbers were exchanged and group chats were created. Dates and times were set for organised gatherings to share our stories, knowledge and history.

What’s eye-catching in the garden is a mangrove (红杉树) sculpture. Made with wood from deforested mangroves, it aims to raise awareness of the harmful impact we are having on the world as we continue to cut down our trees for profit. The building of the garden has been a community effort, and shows what can be done when people pull together and do something positive.

If visitors take one thing from the garden, I hope it is the awareness that we can come together as a community not just to respond to a disaster, but for the future generations who will have to live with the consequences of our actions today.
