Topher White visited a wildlife reserve in Indonesia. He was hiking through the rain forest when he came across a man ________ a huge tree.

The logger ran away while seeing White, but the ________ bothered White. He knew the wildlife reserve employed rangers（护林员）to watch out for illegal loggers. But the guards hadn’t known about the man White saw. How did they ________ him? White wondered.

White, a trained engineer, thought ________ could be part of the solution in the fight against deforestation. He then ________ a device he calls a Guardian. Guardian can ________ the sound of a chain saw from two-thirds of a mile away. They are ________ on the tree. When a Guardian detects a chain saw, it sends a ________ to rangers, indicating where the sound is coming from. The rangers then set off to stop the illegal activity. “If you really ________ the moment you get the warning, there’s a ________ that you can show up before much of the tree has been cut,” White says.

White installed the first Guardians at the wildlife reserve where he got the ________ for the project. Two days later, the devices helped rangers ________ a logger. That made him ________ others could use this too. Since then, White has created and installed Guardians in ten countries. White says he couldn’t have done any of this without local ________. “We are just tech for them,” he says, “The people who are really making a ________ and fighting deforestation are on the ground in the rain forest.”

On a cold afternoon in January 2017, Kate Will, 10, got off a school bus in Lenexa, Kansas, near the apartment building where she lives with her family. When the ________ pulled away, Kate saw police and emergency workers attending to ________ of a three-car accident that had happened at a busy crossroads nearby.
