Welcome to the winter edition of City Matters.

You must put your rubbish in your wheelie bin to keep your environment clean. Don’t pile your rubbish up in your house or garden—use a wheelie bin or one of our largest bins.

You can buy a wheelie bin from our Waste Management Section at 01943 874 122.

You can tell us about mice or rubbish in your area by phoning our Public Health Unit at 01943 874 146. Dropping rubbish can be expensive. Did you know that you can get a $5 fine for dropping wubbish on the streets? Our council officers are on the streets of Bradford looking for people who drop rubbish. They will fine people who drop litter. This is part of our “Don’t Drop It; Stop It!” campaign.

Just think how full your bin gets over the holidays. To reduce your waste:

◆Say “no” to unwanted bags. Take your own bags to the supermarket or reuse old ones. Get your free shopping bag from our Advice Centre.

◆Recycle your waste. Take bottles to your local recycling centre.

◆Buy recycled things. Cards and paper are good examples.

Our competition winners

As part of our “Don’t Drop It; Stop It!” campaign, community groups from the north, south, east and west of the city—500 volunteers—entered our competition to clean up their area. The goal was to make the city cleaner for those who live, work, shop or play there. The four winners were: High Trees Parents Group, South Bradford Community Project, The Bridge Community Association and Forest Youth Group.

Chances are that you have spent way too much time in front of your screen in the past few months. This year, let’s get outdoors. Below are a few places that’ll have you feeling refreshed.

In Vermont, nature always takes center stage. Whether it’s the snowy mountains in winter,   the wildflowers in spring, swimming. holes in summer, or the colorful leaves in fall, there’s always something new to explore. Hit the Green Mountains for camping, skiing, and rafting adventures

If you’re looking to relax, Jekyll Island is the place to go. You’ll have seven beaches to choose from. While you’re there, visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, which offers tours and educational programs about the preservation of this endangered species.

Tenerife might not be as well-known as some other islands, but that’ll change soon thanks to new direct flights from the East Coast. It’s packed with natural wonders, vineyards and beaches. Spend the day whale watching and then head out for stargazing at night.

Costa Rica is a popular spot that still feels undiscovered. Hike through lava fields or zip line above the jungle for an exciting adventure. Head to the beach with your favorite surfing board, do morning yoga, or simply relax all day. For a taste of local culture, visit a coffee farm or wander through Santa Teresa for drinks with a view.

STPI is a space for experimentation of print and paper. Walk through the gallery and join other art lovers in developing an appreciation of print and paper art practice. STPI allows you to own a piece of the work produced by artists at the gallery workshops.

Red Dot Design Museum (RDDM)

From lighting to parasol (阳伞), the Red Dot Design Museum presents award­winning products and design concepts from over 30 countries. Head to the Design Museum Shop, there are many interesting design objects and collections sourced from all over the world.

National Gallery Singapore (NGS)

NGS occupies two major landmarks — the former Supreme Court and City Hall — and features over 8,000 artworks, which is the largest public display of modern Southeast Asian art and culture. Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM)

Fascinated by stamps? SPM features postage stamps dating all the way back from the 1830s. Enjoy this vibrant museum's in­depth presentation of local and international postal history.
