You want to have fun and adventure and so you decide to travel somewhere to do it. Sounds like a simple enough thing. And basically it is. But what is adventure? That is the key here and the answer can be different for different people.

For those who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel types that you can find include such adventure travel as white water rafting (白浪漂流), kayaking(皮艇运动) or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For this type of person, adventure travel almost always includes something physical. Often the goal is to push their body’s limits and test their individual endurance (耐力).

For those who less want to climb mountains, adventure travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed travelers who enjoy peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope (范围) of the travelers’ lifestyle defines (定义) adventure.

Adventure travel is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the person’s physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for YOU — not for the person next to you.

Do not sit home this year when vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine(常规) and try something new. If you usually spend your vacation sun-bathing on a beach, try hiking, instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your comfort zone and head out on an adventure vacation.

IN the famous fairy tale, Snow White eats the Queen’s apple and falls victim to a curse; in Shakespeare’s novel, Romeo drinks the poison and dies; some ancient Chinese emperors took pills that contained mercury, believing that it would make them immortal, but they died afterward.
Poison has long been an important ingredient in literature and history, and it seems to always be associated with evil, danger and death. But how much do you really know about poison?
An exhibition, The Power of Poison, opened last month at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, intended to give the audience a more vivid understanding of poison. The exhibition will continue until Aug 2014, reported The New York Times.
The museum tour starts in a rainforest setting, where you can see live examples of some of the most poisonous animals: caterpillars, frogs and spiders. Golden poison frogs, for instance, aren’t much bigger than a coin, but their skin is covered in a poison that can cut off the signaling power of your nerves, and a single frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown humans.
The exhibition also features interactive activities. In an iPad-based game, visitors are presented with three puzzling illnesses and asked to identify the poisons based on symptoms. In one case, for example, a pet dog is found sick in a backyard and visitors have to figure out whether it was the toad (蟾蜍), the leaky batteries in the trash or the dirty pond water that did it.
“Poisons can be bad for some things,” Michael Novacek, senior vice president of the museum, told NBC News. “Yet they can also be good for others.”
This is what visitors learn from the last part of the exhibition, which displays how poisons can be used favorably by humans, including for medical treatment.
The blood toxins of vampire bats, for example, can prevent blood from clotting (凝结), which may protect against strokes. A poisonous chemical found in the yew tree is effective against cancer, which is what led to the invention of a cancer-fighting drug called Taxol. One chemical in the venom of Gila monsters can lower the blood sugar of its victims, so it has been used to treat diabetes.
The benefits from natural poisons are not limited to just medicine. Believe it or not, many substances that we regularly take in – chili, coffee and chocolate, etc. – owe their special flavors or stimulating effects to chemicals that plants make to poison insects.

Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada. Despite the mild weather, tourists should be prepared for rain, which is practically part of the city’s lifestyle.

With immigrants accounting for more than 40 percent of the population, Vancouver has a special multicultural charm of its own. The local Chinatown, for example, is the largest in Canada and is a real attraction that should not be missed. Asian cuisine is also particularly strong in Vancouver. Sushi lovers will find the restaurant established by the inventor of California rolls, Hidekazu Tojo, in the city center of Vancouver. The Marine Building is another attraction in the downtown area. It was built in 1930 and was the city’s largest building for nine years. Although it lost its reputation relatively quickly, it is still one of the most popular structures in Vancouver and is well-known around the world.

Tourists should not miss making a trip to one of the beautiful beaches in the evening. Sunset Beach is particularly worth mentioning and its name shows its charm in advance. The beach is primarily known for its beautiful sunsets among the residents of Vancouver. The Celebration of Light Fireworks Festival also takes place every July and the various beaches are the ideal place to experience it.

Even if they do not visit the aquarium (水族馆), tourists still have the opportunity to admire Canada’s sea life during a whale-watching tour. Wild killer whales or dolphins often do their rounds near the southern coast of Vancouver Island. It is easy to reach the island by boat, but it has more to offer than just a day’s trip, as it is almost 500 kilometers long. Tourists who are interested in the First Nations find particular satisfaction here. Guided tours explain the indigenous(土著的) culture to visitors, particularly near the coast.

Two years ago, I watched the film Everest, in which adventurers get stuck on the mountain during a snowstorm. I immediately knew I had to start climbing. It’s not the reaction most people have to that film; maybe I just needed more adventure in my life. And six months later, I climbed my first mountain, Mount Whitney, in California – North America’s highest peak.

In the summer of 2017, I decided to climb the highest peak in every European country.

Growing up in Sweden, I was encouraged by my father to be outdoors all the time, but I wasn’t a serious adventurer. I wanted to see if someone ordinary like me could climb mountains.

I didn’t do any preparation for the first mountain, which was Mount Elbrus in Russia. It was exhausting, but I thought I would get fit climbing the rest, and I did.

Climbing mountains is an experience that is hard to put into words. You are in a beautiful environment and, when you reach the top, you feel incredible. But you also have to climb down, which is when most accidents happen. I don’t climb mountains that I am not ready for, but each one I climb takes me to the next step.

I wanted to end the project at home, on Sweden’s highest peak (2,097 m). It has two peaks: the north is rocky, and the south is icy. So alongside my camera assistant, I climbed both while wearing a superhero suit. It didn’t feel as special as I’d hoped when I reached the top, but when I posted on Instagram, people started congratulating me, I felt proud.

In total, I spent about €50,000, which is double what I had planned, but I eventually climbed 61 mountains in Europe.

You have to work on your weak sides while climbing. I don’t like not being in control, but you cannot control anything on a mountain. It’s made me a better person. When you’re on a mountain for hours alone with your thoughts, it’s like meditation. It makes you so much stronger, physically, and mentally.

My goal now is always to have a mountain in my calendar. One day I will climb Mount Qomolangma when I’m ready for it.
