All over the world there are people who have achieved great things. Yet many of these people have done so with one amazing difference: They have physical disabilities. Take Jim Abbott for example, Jim succeeded 【小题1】 becoming a pitcher (投球手) for the USA 1988 Summer Olympics Team.

Jim Abbott was born without his right hand. He was a 【小题2】 (talent) athlete and wanted to be a baseball pitcher, even though being able to use two hands 【小题3】 (be) extremely important in playing baseball. A pitcher needs to throw the ball with one hand and wear a baseball glove on the other—something 【小题4】 Jim couldn’t do.

From the time he was four years old, Jim worked at 【小题5】 (overcome) this challenge. He practiced 【小题6】(rapid) moving the glove to his good hand after he had pitched the ball to his father. He was always forcing 【小题7】 (he) to get that glove faster and faster.

Jim Abbott made up his mind 【小题8】 (play). He loved the game 【小题9】 much that he invented his won method to help him do it with excellence. He went on to be a Major League pitcher for the New York Yankees, and today is an 【小题10】 (inspire) to young athletes everywhere.

Shawn Cheshire is a blind cyclist who competed in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She lost her ability 【小题1】(see) after an accident nine years ago. She has tried to become as 【小题2】(depend) as possible in the last few years.

She said that, 【小题3】 a long time, she was in a really dark place and hated being blind. She said that sports and physical exercise gave 【小题4】(she) another opportunity at living.

Earlier this month, Cheshire crossed 68 kilometers of steep and uneven ground in the Grand Canyon(大峡谷). She did so in 24 hours and 15 minutes, 【小题5】 is believed to be a record for a blind hiker (徒步旅行者). The 【小题6】(early) record of 28 hours 【小题7】(set) in 2014.

Three friends helped her during the Grand Canyon hike. They walked several steps apart. They guided and warned her of 【小题8】(barrier). She listened for and followed the sound of a bell 【小题9】(wear) by the lead hiker. She used hiking poles for balance.

Cheshire and her friends finished the hike on October 8, 2018. She said as the group neared 【小题10】 end of the trip, “I had a huge ball of emotion welled up in my chest –I cannot believe we just did that.”

It’s never easy for 【小题1】 Asian athlete to shine in track and field events. But Su Bingtian, 28, 【小题2】 (know) as the “Chinese flying man”, became the first male Chinese sprinter to win a 【小题3】 (globe) medal in an individual event. On March 3, he 【小题4】 (take) the silver in the men’s 60m final at the World Indoor Championships in the UK. In the final, Su Bingtian ran his personal best of 6. 42 seconds, 【小题5】 (break) the Asian record of 6. 43, which he also set last month in Germany.

The last time a Chinese athlete achieved a milestone was in 2004, 【小题6】 Liu Xiang won a gold medal in Athens 【小题7】 the 110m hurdles. Inevitably, Su is compared to Liu. “Liu Xiang is my idol and also my friend,” Su told Xinhua News Agency.
