It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice Esposito arrived at the New York train station and began the 20-minute drive home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove on autopilot (自动驾驶): a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then — bang! Out of nowhere, a car T-boned Janice’s car, pushing her backward onto the railroad tracks.

As it happened, Pole Dipinto was getting ready for bed. He’d just closed his book when he heard the loud crash not far outside his bedroom window. A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and still in his pajamas (睡衣), ran out of the door. “Any firefighter would have done what I did,” he said, “We’re always on duty.”

The first car he came upon was the one that had hit Janice. Once Dipinto concluded the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Janice’s car lay across the railroad tracks. And then he heard a terrible sound: the bells signaling an on-coming train.

Dipinto rushed to Janice’s car and banged on the driver’s side window. She just looked at him, her eyes unfocused. “I don’t know where I am,” she said. She seemed unhurt. “Honey, you’re on the railroad tracks,” Dipinto shouted, “We have to get you off right now!” He pulled hard on the door handle, but it didn’t work. The heavy train, traveling at 65 miles per hour, was heading toward them. Dipinto ran to the passenger side and threw open the door. “Please, God, don’t let her be trapped”, he thought. He pushed aside the airbags, grabbed Janice’s arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he could help her out and walk her to safety. Within six seconds, he estimated, the train crashed into the car.

“It was like a Hollywood movie,” Dipinto told reporters the next day. But this one had a difference. That night, the hero arrived in pajamas, not in a fire truck.

Land of Love and Peace

Xia Hong has been living in Tashikurgan Tajik autonomous county in the southwest of Xinjiang for the past six years. Her love for the cold and remote county comes from her unforgettable trips to the Tajik villages. People’s kindness and hospitality (好客) left the deepest impression on her mind.

After she moved there, Xia opened a café. She mixes her coffee with local produce for fresh tastes and also gives her concoctions (混合物) lovely names for a lasting impression. “The juice lends the coffee a color, similar to what the sky looks like from the Pamir Plateau (帕米尔高原),” she explains.

Besides managing her café, Xia loves traveling around the county, reading books, holding parties for friends and posting articles and videos online to share her experiences.

Xia finds the leisurely lifestyle peaceful. “Sometimes, I just sit outside the café and look at the mountains or clouds. The feeling is so good to be so close to nature,” she says.

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock (货物) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds? (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.
When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.
When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn’t believe my eyes; this wasn’t shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.
Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl(爬行) through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get near themselves.
Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English Queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper(脾气)! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham’s were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.
In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.
You won’t believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

I can’t remember when my dog finally stopped crying in fear at its top voice. For months after we took her home from a nearby rescue organization, Millie cried all the time. If you only walked past her, a sound would erupt that could freeze your blood.

When we adopted Millie in August of 2019 she was mentally hurt to a serious degree. Obviously, she was afraid of everything around her. A gentle touch from a little kid or the friendly smell of a small dog could make this full-grown dog frightened to death. The lights of a car would send her into great fear. Many sights and sounds terrified Millie so much that once she even couldn’t go to sleep in 36 hours.

But recently we’ve come to realize that we might have turned Millie into a naughty(淘气的) kid. Early on, trying to make her believe that the world contains good things, my husband started saving her the last mouth of his bread. This dog who had to be tricked (哄骗)into eating now knows exactly when the clock strikes five and then she follows me around and reaches his paws to me until I feed her. This dog who feared all strangers now greets guests with a kind of enthusiasm that not all guests actually welcome.

People who haven’t seen her for a while all say that, “This is not the same dog I met last time.” But she is the same dog. She has just become a happier, braver dog. Even now, Millie is not yet the dog she is in the process of becoming. But the warmth of the world has turned her into a better self.
