Surfing: Famous Beaches, Famous Waves
North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii: Famous for being the birthplace of surfing
Wide, and beaches stretch nearly 20 miles along the Pacific Ocean. Between October and February, this surfing destination is suitable only for experienced surfers, as its big waves can reach 30 feet. In summer, the ocean can be almost completely flat, making it perfect for swimming.
Huntington Beach, California: Famous for the US Open of Surfing competition
This busy 8.5-mile-long beach attracts 8 million visitors a year for bodysurfing, boogie boarding (趴板冲浪) and board surfing at every level, beginner to expert. At night, the beach's fire pits draw families as much as the waves do during the day. The best time for surfers is winter, when the swells can hit 15 feet.
Jeffreys Bay, South Africa: Famous for being the setting of the classic movie The Endless Summer
This area of the ocean may contain the most consistent waves on the planet, with some up to 10 feet. The best waves are between late May and late August. The beach sometimes closes because of sharks, but at other times, surfaces are lucky enough to surf alongside dolphins.
Tamarindo, Costa Rica: Famous for being featured in the movie The Endless Summer II
This beach has waves up to 12 feet high, which are good for long boarders or short boarders, beginners or expense, with the best waves from April to July. Bodysurfing is not recommended because of offshore rocks. The relaxed atmosphere and nearly perfectly year-round weather make it feel like the California beaches of the 1950s.

Four days of fun, sun and celebrities, as well as networking, career workshops and mentoring (指导), were in store for two Long Island teens chosen to take part in the 12th annual Disney Dreamers Academy (DDA) at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Chosen from thousands of applicants, Tianna Gonzales and Kaiya Simmons were part of a group of 100 young people who marched in the Magic Kingdom Parade and made conversation with Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter and actor Miles Brown.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Kaiya Simmons, 14, moved to Miller Place at the age of 3. A ninth grader at Miss Porter’s School, Kaiya says she enjoys acting, art and science and is currently studying environmental science. “It is fun learning about the environment and different ways to help protect it,” Kaiya says. “I am also learning different techniques to improve my acting on stage and in films.” After high school, Kaiya hopes to attend Yale University and pursue a career as a doctor.
Tianna Gonzales, a 10th grader at Sachem High School North, is interested in psychology and music and plays the saxophone (an instrument) for the school’s marching band, orchestra and symphonic band. Other school activities she participates in include track, Model United Nations, Foreign Language Honor Society and Art Club Honor Society. “Once I graduate, I plan to work in the film world, hopefully attending New York University or New York Film Academy,” she says. “Through storytelling, we can shape this century to be an even stronger attraction for societal change.”
The Disney Dreamers Academy is aimed at helping to inspire young people during a critical time of their development. “Our goal is to help them see the unlimited possibilities and to inspire them to achieve their purpose — to become the heroes of their own stories”, says Tracey D. Powell, vice president of Walt Disney World Resort.

“Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”
