The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire

It feels as though the very heart of France and the soul of Europe have been broken. The fire of Notre Dame in Paris 【小题1】 Monday evening was an act of blind and terrible destruction, 【小题2】 (cause) great emotional pains to us all. We all share France’s terrible loss.

The fire struck 【小题3】 (quick) and uncontrollably. It gathered force with huge power. Much of the roof and the central building caught fire. After an hour or so, the Paris firefighters were able 【小题4】 (get) part of the fire under some degree of control and to protect other 【小题5】 (part) of the building that may survive. As night 【小题6】 (fall), the great west towers still stood against the sky, proud but hurt.

The Notre Dame is the symbol of the French capital and of France itself. It 【小题7】 (be) in its place since the 12th century. It is world famous not simply as a Parisian building but through the 【小题8】 (write) of Victor Hugo, 【小题9】 made the building itself come alive in his novel Hunchback of Notre Dame.

We believe the Dame will rise again in time. This terrible fire is not an event that should 【小题10】 (ignore) or quickly forgotten. We stand with France in its hour of heartbreak. We will never, ever, turn away.

When the fire alarm woke her up at 6:50 a.m., Cloe Woods immediately took action. 【小题1】 5-­year-­old girl jumped out of bed and found herself 【小题2】 (surround) with heavy smoke. Remembering 【小题3】 she’d learned on a school field trip to the local fire department in Kenner, Louisiana, she went to wake up her blind grandmother, Claudia Arceneaux, 76, who had lost her sight nine 【小题4】 (month) earlier.

Cloe told her grandmother to hold her shoulder as they walked out of their home. Once outside, started looking for water, 【小题5】 (think) she could put the fire out herself.

The fire was eventually put out. A firefighter praised Cloe for her 【小题6】 (brave)．

“Cloe is ahead of my time,” Shone Arceneaux, Cloe’s mom, said 【小题7】 (proud). “Who knows what could have happened 【小题8】 it hadn’t been for Cloe? Of course, we owe great thanks 【小题9】 Cloe’s school for providing Cloe with the chance to learn about fire safety.”

The family is now at a hotel while the house 【小题10】 (repair). Meanwhile, Cloe’s school is raising money to help the family recover.

When a light passenger plane flew off course some time ago, it crashed in the mountains and its pilot【小题1】(kill). The only passengers, a young woman and two baby【小题2】(daughter), were unhurt. It was the middle of winter. Snow 【小题3】(lie) thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. When it grew dark, she changed a suitcase【小题4】 a bed and put the children inside it, 【小题5】(cover) them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case 【小题6】 (her), but it was too small. Early, next morning she heard planes passing overhead and wondered 【小题7】 she could send a signal. Then she had 【小题8】idea. She stamped(踩) out the letters ‘SOS’ in the snow.【小题9】(Fortunate), a pilot saw the signal and sent a message by radio to the nearest town. 【小题10】was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.
