Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! It’s eight o'clock now! Here comes the time for Morning New Highlights.

One person was killed and two were injured in a car accident just thirty minutes ago. Cause of the accident is not yet found out. A great fire swept through a storehouse next to the Fulton River early this morning, causing about $3,000,000 in damage. The fire which broke out at about 2:30 was finally put out at 5:30.

During a heavy rainfall last night a bus carrying 42 passengers slipped off the road on Highway 28, killing 36 of the passengers and the driver. A spokesman for the Highway Patrol (巡逻队) who arrived at the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. estimated that the accident had happened about half an hour before. The injured and the dead were sent to the nearest town of Valley View. At the point where the accident happened the road has a three-lane highway with many curves (弯道). Cause of the accident has not been fully found out.

Aron Lee Ralston was born in a middle class American household. His family moved to Colorado when Aron was 12 years old and this move laid the foundation for his love for hiking around the canyons (峡谷).

Aron’s life changed on April 26th, 2003, upon facing the event that threatened to take his life, and almost took it. He was hiking through the Blue John Canyon and he accidentally displaced a huge rock he was climbing down from. The rock caught his right hand in between itself and the canyon wall.

Aron had decided to go on the adventure alone and hadn’t informed anybody about it. So, when he was unable to free his right hand, he felt he would be stuck forever in there. He tried hard to get his hand out but failed, and screaming for help was of no use either. Moreover, he didn’t want to wear himself out as shouting for help would take a lot of energy, which was essential (重要) for surviving the unfortunate event for a long period of time.

After a couple of days, he knew it was impossible for him to set himself free from an 800-pound rock. He decided to cut off his right hand. He had a blunt (钝的) pocket knife with him,   which wasn’t sharp enough to cut through the bone. Some time passed and his water and food supply ended. He carved his name, date of birth and a possible date of death on the stone.

But luckily he got a strange idea that he could use the torque (扭转力) and his bones to separate his arm from his body. With the help of his very limited tool, he finally succeeded and walked out of the canyon, bleeding in large amounts. Fortunately, a holidaying family saw him and gave him food and water, and then took him to a hospital.

After the accident, Aron got a prosthetic limb (假肢) and continued mountain climbing,   considering the accident as a “turning point in his life”.

A Jacksonville family was grateful to be alive this weekend, and the dad, Steven Poust said it’s all because of his 7-year-old son, Chase. The young boy beat a current that separated him from his father and 4-year-old sister, Abigail, in the St. Johns River near Mandarin Point on Friday.

Steven Poust anchored (抛锚) his boat in the water while he fished and his kids played around it. While Chase and Abigail were in the water, Abigail let go of the boat because of a current and they were both stuck.

Chase felt really scared, because he didn’t have a life jacket on. Luckily Abigail had one but she floated along with the current. Poust jumped in the water trying to grab Abigail while Chase tried to swim to the shore. Poust tried to grasp both of them, but he wore himself out. Abigail floated away from him.

Chase kept swimming to the shore. He first doggie paddled, then floated on his back to make sure he wouldn’t tire himself out. The current went the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way. He made it to the shore while his dad and sister were stuck in the water before being rescued by the firefighters.

Once Chase reached the shore, he ran to the nearest home to knock for help and the hostess called the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

“I screamed for help at the top of my lungs and waved my arms and sure enough someone heard me,” Poust said. “Abigail also made it to the shore and got help and our lives were saved.”
