Kevin Duke wanted to buy his daughter a second-hand car for her 16th birthday. So he found one. Before he bought it, he checked the engine and every comer inside the car to make sure it was all good and safe. When he came to the glove compartment(杂物箱), he discovered an envelope inside.

On the envelope was written: "New Car Owner. Important Info Inside."

Out of curiosity, he opened the envelope and read what was inside. He was quite touched by what it had said and wanted to offer help. The letter was written by a young woman named Sabrina. In it she said that she had recently lost her mom, her 6-year-old daughter and her aunt in a terrible house fire. Her mom owned that car and she loved it. But she had to sell it for all their funerals. She wished the new owner to enjoy the new car, hoping it would bring that person many precious memories.

She went on in the letter to say: "So now that it's yours, please remember it isn't just a car. It's full of memories. Be nice to it. By the way, her name is Sylvia, given by my dear daughter. So please don't change it. If you ever want to sell Sylvia, please try to find me. I don't have enough money to buy it right now, but hopefully, I'll be in a better financial situation if you decide later that she's just not right for you anymore- Be happy every day. I wish you and Sylvia the best."

Unfortunately, 81-year-old Barney had lost two most beloved people of his life, his wife, and his only daughter, who left her 6-year-old son Tommy in his hands.

Tommy was a bright, talented young boy with a promising future ahead of him. But with insufficient resources, he knew it would be hard to provide Tommy with the way he deserved and dreamed. Barney applied for a job as a pizza deliveryman. It was exhausting, because Barney had to go up and down to different addresses on hot, cold, and rainy days, door-delivering pizzas to customers. Hard though the job was, the pay was not that great.

However, Barney was fueled by the thought that every box of pizza he delivered was money and one step closer to giving his grandson a better life. With the thought of his grandson’s future in his mind, Barney drove to the address that winter morning.

The cold winter air froze everything on its path. With a deep sense of relief, Barney finally arrived at the address. His heart raced at seeing the angry client, a teenage boy named Fabian, on the doorstep.

“What took you so long?” Fabian screamed. Barney observed the teen’s anger and realized he wouldn’t get any tips. However, he was fortunate enough that he was at least able to deliver the pizzas to the client.

Just as Barney made his way up the stairs with the pizza boxes, he fell down on the concrete, hurting his leg. And the 15 boxes of pizza he was holding went everywhere on the ground.

“How did they hire an old man like you? Clean up the mess and get out!” Fabian made fun of Barney as he struggled to rise on his feet. To make things worse, Fabian’s friends ganged up cruelly laughing at poor Barney. Barney realized he had broken his leg due to the severe fall. Fabian’s angry words kept ringing in Barney’s head as he lay helpless and painful on the icy ground, crying.

Suddenly, the boy saw his friends running away in different directions. Fabian froze still when he recognized it was his dad, Albert. The gentleman was beyond shocked as his son would throw a party at home when he was supposed to be preparing for his exams.

The sky was dark. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the sky. I shivered with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely bathed in the heavy rain.

Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren carrying their heavy schoolbags and rushing home. I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and slabs of metal and a hole seemed to have been dug and hurriedly covered with wooden boards.

I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard someone crying. I quickly turned back to the place where the sounds came. I was horrified! To my shock, there seemed to be a small child stuck in the big hole on the road. The wooden boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. Though I could barely identify how deep the hole was and whether there was any other victim as it was dark all around me, I was sure, at least, the child was not only stuck in the hole, but faced the risk of getting drowned. I told him that I was going to get help.

A long time ago, a Monk (修士) set out on his travels accompanied by his assistant, a Brother. Night was falling when the Monk told the Brother to go on ahead to find accommodation. The Brother searched the deserted landscape until he found a shabby cottage, in the middle of nowhere. A poor family lived in the cottage. The mother, father and children were dressed in rags. The Brother asked if he and the Monk could spend the night with them. “You are most welcome to spend the night,” said the father of the family. They prepared a simple meal consisting of fresh milk, cheese and cream for the Brother and the Monk. The Brother felt moved by their poverty and even more by their simple generosity.

When they finished eating, the Monk asked them how they managed to survive in such a poor place, so far away from the nearest neighbors and town. The wife looked to her husband to answer. In a resigned tone of voice he told them how they managed to survive. “We have one cow. We sell her milk to our neighbors who do not live too far away. We hold back enough for our needs and to make some cheese and cream — that is what we eat.”

The next morning, the Brother and the Monk said their good-byes and set out to continue their journey. After they had walked a few miles, the Monk turned to the Brother and said, “Go back and push the cow off the cliff (悬崖)!” “Father,” the Brother replied, “they live off the cow. Without her, they will have nothing.” The Monk repeated his order “go back and kill the cow”.

With a heavy heart, the Brother returned to the small cottage. He worried about the future of the family because he knew they depended on the cow to survive. His promise of obedience bound him to follow the orders of the wise Monk. He pushed the cow off the cliff.
