When you are standing in front of fruit shelves in the supermarket, what is your attitude toward the imperfect tomatoes? Will you be blind to the ugly tomatoes without any hesitation and even throw them aside in disgust? Or will you put them in the shopping baskets without discrimination(歧视)? Most of you will bethe former.

Ugly produce is always left along the whole supply chain. After rounds of selection from farmers, packers and retailers, the annual percentage of eatable food waste is more than 30%(900,000 tons)before the produce arrives at shop shelves. These eatable wastes can feed over 2 million people per year. Besides, we also should not ignore the investment in the production process and the pollution caused by rot. For example, one-kilogram apple production consumes 822 litres of water. One ton of vegetables or fruits that are thrown away can produce around 800 litres of polluted water. And food transport is also a source of greenhouse gas.

Is there any great option to maximize farmer interests and reduce further losses? The answer is "YES". After Woolworth in Australia and Countdown in New Zealand introduced "The Odd Bunch", many retailers in America attempted to develop similar projects that could build a bridge between consumers and farmers, and offer ugly produce at more competitive prices. Through these projects, retail enterprises have built corporate reputation and gained confidence from the public. Farmers have significantly reduced the planting cost because of vast purchasing requirements from retailers. Consumers have enjoyed the similar taste at lower prices.

All the food is born equal, and all the food has the same right to be enjoyed. We shouldn't discriminate food through its uncommon looking. Life's "misery"(eg. exposure to the burning sun)will contribute to a more pleasant taste of food. Please value the unique appearance and qualities of these special foods!

Sherry Gao is pouring coffee made from single-origin beans, hoping that her Mandarin Coffee Stand in the city of Pasadenawill, California introduces you to your new favorite coffee and turns your preconceptions about Chinese coffee beans upside down.

Much of the Western world imports its coffee from Africa and South America. But Gao hopes that throwing light on Yunnan-sourced coffee could expose customers to the coffee-producing region and help to break down prejudice against the beans, which for decades, until only a few years ago, were primarily used for instant products.

“We wanted to highlight Chinese coffee because a lot of people never had Chinese coffee before,” Gao said. “Some have the mindset that it’s bad or it’s cheap, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s been changing so much over the last decade.”

Recent experimentation with processing, such as the addition of fruit or sugarcane molasses during the production, is leading Yunnan’s coffee to more flavorful results. “Every time a new product comes in, it tastes better than the last one,” Gao said.

Farmers in China have grown tea for more than 3,000 years, but coffee has been grown there for only about a century in small quantities, with an uptick in the 1980s with government involvement. And the turn of the century and the 2010s saw a sharp growth with international corporations investing in the region’s crops, initially for use in instant coffee.

But in the last 10 to 15 years, tastes and demand for specialty and high-grade coffees emerged, especially from local growers and shops. The domestic demand for China-grown coffee has risen so dramatically that Gao says it’s now much more expensive.

To further connect with the community, Gao hopes to one day host classes for interactive how-to events. After all, she says, the Yunnan coffee tastes excellent when made in one’s own kitchen with a pour-over system and she hopes it’s only a matter of time before home specialty coffee enthusiasts catch on too.

Nowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms (有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, the hightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature.
In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle.
However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks?
The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness.
How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.
