Zika virus. Malaria. West Nile virus. Dengue fever. Have you ever heard of these illnesses? If so, you likely know what they all have in common. These are a few of the diseases spread by one of the greatest pests known to humankind一the mosquito.

Much of the time, mosquito bites are just itchy. Nothing ruins a backyard barbecue faster than a mass of these bloodsucking insects. However, some mosquitoes carry viruses that cause deadly ilnesses. In fact, some experts say mosquitoes are a bigger threat to human life than any other organism.

Over the centuries, mosquitoes are thought to have caused the deaths of 52 billion people. That’s half the people who have ever lived on Earth! Even today, ilnesses spread by mosquitoes kill more people each year than war does.

It should be no surprise that many people would like to get rid of mosquitoes. What if we could wipe out the entire mosquito population? No more malaria. No more Zika. No more itchy bumps after a summer day spent outdoors. Doesn’t that sound great?

Not so fast. Sure, some species of mosquitoes harm humans. But others don’t pose any threat at al! In fact, some of these mosquitoes play important parts in their ecosystems. Let’s look at a few ways.

Many of our Wonder Friends already know that bees play an important part in pollination(授粉). It turns out, mosquitoes do, too! Most mosquitoes actually drink nectar( 花蜜) instead of blood. When they do so, they help pollinate the plants they feed on.

It’s also important to remember that even mosquitoes are part of an ecosystem. Without them, the food chain would be disturbed.

Adult mosquitoes are a food source for bats, birds, spiders, and small mammals. Without them, these animals would need to find something else to eat. Some experts even think mosquitoes could be used to help humans.

If you wear glasses, chances are you are smarter. Research published in the famous British journal Nature Communications has found that people who displayed higher levels of intelligence were almost 30 percent more likely to wear glasses.

The scientists studied the genes of thousands of people between the ages of 16 and 102.The study showed intelligence can be connected to physical characteristics. One characteristic       was eyesight. In out of 10 people who were more intelligent, there was a higher chance they needed glasses. Scientists also said being smarter has better benefits. It is connected to better health.

It is important to remember these are connections which are not proven causes. Scientists call this correlation. Just because something is connected to something else does not mean one of those things caused the other. And it's worth noting that what constitutes intelligence is subjective and can be difficult, if not impossible, to measure.

Forget genes though. Plenty of proof shows wearing glasses makes people think you are more intelligent, even if you do not need glasses. A number of studies have found people who wear glasses are seen as smarter, hard working and honest. Many lawyers use this idea to help win their cases. Lawyer Harvey Slovis explained this. Glasses soften their appearance, he said. Sometimes there has been a huge amount of proof showing that people he was defending broke the law. He had them wear glasses and they weren't found guilty.

Glasses are also used to show someone is intelligent in movies and on TV. Ideas about people who wear glasses have begun to shift. People who do not need glasses sometimes wear them for fashion only. They want to look worldly or cool. But not everyone is impressed by this idea, though. GQ magazine said people who wear glasses for fashion are trying too hard to look smart and hip(时髦的). However, that hasn’t stopped many celebrities from happily wearing glasses even if they do not need them. Justin Bieber is just one high-profile fan of fashion glasses.

Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow bands of moisture in the atmosphere. These rivers in the sky can transport 15 times the volume of the Mississippi River. When that moisture reaches the coast and moves inland, it rises over the mountains, bringing rain and snow. Many fire-weary people welcome the water, but atmospheric rivers can cause other disasters, such as extreme flooding and debris flows.

On Feb. 27, 2019, an atmospheric river occurred. Just north of San Francisco Bay, in Sonoma County’s famed wine country, the storm brought over 21 inches of rain. For the fifth time in four decades, the town of Guerneville was flooded. Damages in the town alone were estimated at more than $100 million.

Events like these have drawn attention in recent years, but atmospheric rivers are not new. They have run through the sky for millions of years. And researchers have known for some time that flooding due to atmospheric rivers could cost a lot of money, but until our study no one had quantified these damages.

We found that atmospheric rivers caused an average of $1.1 billion in flood damages yearly in the western U.S. More than 80 percent of all flooding damages in the West in the years we studied were associated with atmospheric rivers. In some areas, such as coastal northern California, these systems caused more than 99 percent of damages.

And several published studies have modeled how atmospheric rivers will change in the coming decades. The process is simple: Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, warming the planet. This causes more water to evaporate from oceans and lakes, and increased moisture in the air makes storm systems grow stronger. Like hurricanes, atmospheric rivers are projected to grow longer, wider and wetter in a warming climate.

Therefore, I believe that improving atmospheric forecasting systems should be a priority for adapting to a changing climate. Better understanding of atmospheric rivers can provide valuable information to residents and emergency responders. It also is important to discourage new construction in high-risk areas and help people move to safer locations after major disasters, rather than rebuilding in place. Finally, our study underlines the need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, with which these storms will keep coming, and getting stronger.

You may be surprised to learn that one of the best steps you can take to protect your health is to step outside and spend some time in the grass, dirt and water. Our ancestors enjoyed the healing power of nature, and now scientists are starting to catch up. Researchers have documented how contact with nature can decrease mental tiredness, and enhance moods, concentration and problem-solving.Just having a view of nature has been shown to improve hospital patients’ recovery and reduce illness rates. Exposure to the open air, horseback riding, hiking, camping can be helpful for a variety of health conditions in adults and children.Much of this type of research is focusing on children, and in fact an entire movement has quickly developed to connect kids with the healing power of nature.

Obesity. Rates of childhood, adult obesity and related conditions including diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease have grown greatly in recent years, partly because of reducing the time of outdoor activities. This problem can be partly addressed by increasing the time students spend learning about nature, both in and outside the classroom. Such lessons are often more engaging to students and often lead them to become more active outside.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)(注意力缺失症). An exposure to ordinary natural settings in the course of common after school and weekend activities may be widely effective in reducing attention shortness symptoms(症状) in children. Participation in green activities helps ADHD patients keep focused and complete tasks.

Stress. Access to nature, even houseplants, can help children deal with stress. Depression and seasonal emotional disorder. Major depression requires medical treatment, but physical activity, especially those done outdoors, can help ease symptoms. Staying in the sunshine for just a few minutes can also help supply bone-building vitamin D.Experts say that simply walking in a city park can enjoy nature’s benefits.
