Before entering college, I had heard so many stories about how stressful freshman year could get and that this would potentially be the most difficult experience I would ever have to go through. And yes, for the most part, those stories did live up to the reality.

In the first several months, I was urged to improve my social skills and to befriend people. Personally, there was a clear struggle on wanting to adjust and not simply adapt. Adapting required a change in behavior for the sake of fitting in and I didn't want that. Luckily and eventually, I was able to find my own group. It just required extra work and patience.

Naturally, there were academic obstacles that arose. The biggest one was my major. I was enrolled as a communication studies major. I chose it because it seemed like a safe haven. But I later discovered that it didn't actually fit my likes. After two quarters, serious thinking and several mini breakdowns, I switched to philosophy.

Ever since I was younger, I have known I wanted to work in the field. It has always intrigued me. To be honest, I've never had to read such challenging texts in my life, but I enjoy it. It pushes me beyond my limits in a good way. It introduces me to concepts and theories that I've never heard of. More importantly, it doesn't only make me more logical. It also makes me more empathic(有移情作用的)and understanding of others.

I eventually overcame the obstacles. As I recall it now, I'm thankful that the good always outweighed the bad. The good came in the form of new friends, significant learning and deepened self-understanding. As I head off to sophomore year, I plan to bring this good with me.

I often cycle (骑自行车) around Australia and plan to cycle the Nullarbor to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis (MS, 多发性硬化症). I have MS myself, but cycling is a pain-free activity for me. I feel quite relaxed after cycling. But a not-so-kind person stole all of my bikes when I was travelling.

Since this happened, the human kindness I have been shown makes me feel very surprised. A kind lady bought a mountain bike for me to continue riding. A gentleman donated (捐赠) another bike to me to continue training on roads. It was almost impossible to find a bike in my size, because the bike I had before was very short. And it required an extra-small frame (框架). I was quite lucky. My hometown got behind me to raise some money. With this money, I have bought a bike that is just the right size for me.

So far people have offered me places to stay, welcomed me into their warm homes. They made sure I have enough water when riding so long. They also put money in my hands in the street to help me reach my goal. The stolen bikes turned into an interview with ABC Radio and papers in Tasmania.

My point is that there are so many good and kind-hearted people out there. My experience is that people are mainly kind and beautiful. I could never doubt (怀疑) the fact that the world holds more good and kind people than unkind people. That, in itself, is hope! I’m happy that I will cycle on the road again soon, and do my best to give back kindness.

I still remember a lovely girl, though I don't know her name.

We met in the Children’s Hospital, I was 11. I was born with a hole in my heart. So was the five- year-old girl in the bed beside me. We were both recovering from the same operation. Because I was older and wiser, I thought it was my job to look after her. “Do you want to hear a story? ” I asked her one afternoon. “Great! ” she said.

It was so easy to make her happy. She seemed always to be smiling or singing songs.

Life wasn't fair. She passed away. My recovery went well. “You’re really lucky nurse told me. ” But how come my operation was so easy and hers wasn’t?   "I asked. “Easy?” my dad said. “David, your operation wasn't easy at all. We thought we were going to lose you. For two weeks after your operation many things could go wrong. “What's your 'Thing of the Day'?” I asked my fourteen-year-old son as he got a piece of potato onto his plate. This is a question our four kids and whichever friends are staying for supper expect to be asked each evening at suppertime. Usually, it's followed with, “Uhh... Umm... We had pizza for lunch.” And then I have to refuse the response and ask for something meaningful—either something he learned or something that happened with his friends.

But, this day, my son surprised me as he went into great detail about how he had been honestly wronged by a couple of classmates and laughed at in front of the class. I asked more questions and learned that the teachers knew the situation clearly. It had been dealt with as much as the teachers and staff were able to. It was really just a matter of kids being mean and deciding to treat someone unfairly.

I thought about the situation all night. I vacillated between contacting the teachers, contacting the parents of the classmates, and not doing anything since the story had been told to me in a matter-of-fact way—not overly excitedly.

I waited until the next day after school. On the car ride home, I questioned my son what about today after yesterday's situation. My son was honestly surprised that I brought it up again. “What? No, it's over, Mom. They're my friends. They were just being stupid. They apologized. Forgive and forget, you know? We're all good.”

I was worried that perhaps he was trying to hide his concern or sadness about the thing. But as I watched him over the next days and weeks, everything seemed “normal”. Wouldn't it be great if everyone could live the “forgive and forget” way of life?
