A musical, School of Rock, which is played at the Winter Garden Theatre, is based on the 2003 hit movie starring Jack Black and opens on Broadway(百老汇).

“The central message of the story,” the show’s composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, said recently, “is about the driving force of music.” Lloyd Webber, who is behind such Broadway hits as Phantom of the Opera and Cats, runs a music education foundation. He is allowing schools to license the musical while it’s still on Broadway.

School of Rock tells the story of Dewey Finn, an ambitious rock star played by Alex Brightman. When Finn’s musical career hits a dead end, he gets a job as a teacher. While in the classroom, he encourages his fifth graders to form a rock band.

All of the actors play their own instruments during the performance. “If you say that you can do it, and you work hard enough, then you can do it,” said Evie Dolan, who learned to play bass for the role of Katie.

While the musical is very similar to the movie, lyricist Glenn Slater added new songs, including You’re in the Band and Stick It to the Man.

“I really love You’re in the Band,” said the musical’s director, Laurence Connor, “I love that moment when the audience sees the children pick up their instruments for the first time and really play, and find rock music for the first time.”

Bobby Mackenzie, who plays Tomika, said that the experience of expressing herself through music has been a pleasing one. When asked what advice she has for ambitious musicians, she said, “If it is really what you want to do, go for it. Work as hard as you can.”

At the beginning of the 20th century there was a big farm called Hollywood Ranch. It was near Los Angeles in California. A few years later Hollywood was one of the famous places in the world. From the 1910s to the 1950s Hollywood was the film center of the world. Every family knew the names of its film stars—Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and hundreds more.

The reason why people went to Hollywood to make films was the sun. At first, people made films in New York on the east coast of the United States. But then they heard about Los Angeles where there are 350 days of sun every year. As they made all the films by sunlight, the west coast was a much better place to make films. Also near Hollywood you can find mountains, sea and desert. They did not have to travel far to make any kind of film.

When TV became popular, Hollywood started making films for television. Then in the 1970s they discovered people still went to the cinema to see big expensive films. After about thirty years they are still making films in Hollywood and people watch them all over the world.

Starring Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick, Mr. Right tells the story of a young woman named Martha (Kendrick) who’ having, as her friend puts it, a very early mid-life crisis. After being cheated on by her boyfriend, she falls into a low mood that only stops when she meets the equally bizarre and charming “Mr. Right” (Rockwell). The two hit it off so quickly that they're already head-over-heels for one another when a tricky obstacle(障碍) comes to the surface: Mr. Right is a hitman (职业杀手) who’s on the run from the same people who hire him to do jobs.

So does it work? I anticipated that a movie like this would leave me with a definitive answer to that question. It seemed certain to either succeed or fail. But as it turns out, there’s both good and bad in Mr. Right.

The bad really comes down to pacing and exposition. Simply put, the whole thing feels abrupt(突兀的). We're used to our rom-com(爱情喜剧) characters falling for one another in a matter of days, because there’ only so much time in a movie. But in this case, the relationship still felt sudden in a way you couldn't quite buy.

________ , the crime side of the story - the shady figures hunting down Mr. Right - is done in a surprisingly confusing fashion. Basically, there’ a network of villains(恶棍) doing evil things, and you know they're all after Mr. Right. However, their chain of command and respective motives all get a little disorderly along the way.

The good, as it had to be, is entirely in the performance of Rockwell and Kendrick. The former is weird but attractive, presenting a character deeper than he would have been in most any other hands. Kendrick, meanwhile, is wonderfully unusual in her own special way. She actually makes you believe there’s a girl out there whose reaction to her boyfriend killing a rival killer would be “Ah, screw it, let’s get margaritas(玛格丽特酒).”

In the end, the movie’s best scene defines it. Rockwell is good at making an energy flow of sorts that he’s able to tap into. He classifies all “things” as islands, and talks about learning to feel the water in between them to get a sense of where they are and how they're moving. It’s a poetic moment in the movie, and it's actually not a bad way to approach the experience.

The Film: The Great Gatsby (Based on Fitzgerald’s Novel The Great Gatsby)
Director: Baz Luhrmann   Cast: Leonardo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby
Film Reviews:

If you never read the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, now is your chance to catch up — by watching the latest film adaptation. Because if there’s one sentence to sum up the film, it would be: It’s just like the book.

The use of music is almost reason enough to see the film. Baz Luhrmann is at his best mixing visual and musical styles together to create something wholly original, for example, in one of the most outstanding scenes in the film, the first party scene, Nick walks quickly from one party guest to another party guest trying to explain all the gossip about Gatsby until he is finally introduced to the man himself, while the most stirring version of Rhapsody in Blue (蓝色狂想曲), which was composed by American musician George Gershwin in 1924, is played in the background.

—Fox News

Director Baz Luhrmann’s main challenge was either to find a visual equivalent for Fitzgerald’s elegant quality — the open secret of the book’s popularity for so long time — or to match his own unusual personal strengths with the material. He tries it both ways, with considerable degrees of success.

DiCaprio does a good and professional job as the socialite (上流社会人士) by recreating Fitzgerald’s description of Gatsby’s charm. He can look at someone for an instant and understand how, perfectly, he or she wants to be seen.

About the Book and the Main Character

Considered to be Fitzgerald’s representative work, The Great Gatsby explores themes of idealism, resistance to change, social change, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.

Nick, the narrator, moves to New York for the summer to visit his cousin Daisy. His next-door neighbour is Jay Gatsby(Leonardo DiCaprio), who rarely contacts with others and is said to be a hero of the Great War. Gatsby claims to have attended Oxford University, but the evidence is suspect. As Nick learns more about Gatsby, every detail about him seems questionable, except his love for the Daisy. Though Daisy is married, Gatsby still loves her as his “golden girl”. They first met when she was a young lady from a wealthy family and he was a working-class military officer. Daisy promised to wait for his return from the war. However, she married Tom, a classmate of Nick’s. Having obtained a great fortune, Gatsby sets out to win her back again.

【小题2】According to Time Magazine, what did Baz Luhrmann do to make the film a success?
A.He adapted the story in the novel as he wished.
B.He made the film more powerful than the book.
C.He changed the story to meet his own style.
D.He mixed his style with the elegance of the book.
