Do first impressions matter? A colleague thinks so. As each semester (学期) begins, he greets his students wearing a jacket and tie.
“You make only one first impression,” he says. So while the rest of the semester he teaches class in his usual, more casual clothes, during the first week he presents a different image.
Looking professional and trustworthy on the first day, he believes, will carry over through the rest of the semester, when he goes back to the work clothes until he meets new students.
His thought is that students will remember their first meet positively and more willingly give him the benefit of the doubt as the semester goes on because they have been prepared to respect him through that pleasing first impression.
The effect of first impressions is related to the halo effect (晕轮效应), by which the belief in positive qualities in one thing or part leads to the belief in similar qualities in related things or in the whole.
Here is an example: You meet a friendly person at a party and later are asked to get support from others for a worthy career. You contact that person because you think he or she will make a contribution. In reality, there is no inbuilt connection between being pleasant and being generous. Yet the halo effect leads you to believe that the two are related. Most conclude that if she was good in one kind(sociable), she will also be positive in another (generous).
First impressions matter, for good and bad. They are fine when you like someone on first meeting; they are not so fine when the first meeting is unpleasant. Good first impressions lead to social connection; bad first impressions lead to social prejudice (偏见).

I got into the teaching profession purely by choice. I was then in 9th grade when my mathematics teacher asked me to take on a class for a few students to whom the subject seemed difficult. And believe me, I enjoyed the entire teaching process. I never knew teaching would be so interesting. I loved my freshmen and was delighted to teach my so-called students who came up with lots of good questions.
After my post-graduation, I worked as a software developer with a public sector(部门) in Bangalore for a few years. But I realized that no job could provide me with the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching and training. I always wanted to connect with a wider group of people. In fact, I felt it was a timely realization for me to choose the teaching profession. I applied to a few colleges, and finally I was chosen as a lecturer, and I had to lecture graduate and post-graduate students in a college.
On the first day, I was nervous thinking that I had to teach the senior classes. But now I can say that giving lectures was one of the best experiences of my life. I was a Computer Science and Information Technology lecturer, but I tried to help my students with subjects that were not within my domain(范围). It was a new feeling to me every morning before I went to the classes. I used to feel energized and excited thinking that the class would be lit up with bright faces to greet me, “Good morning, Madam.”
To me each day was a new beginning, with new feelings, new experiences and new questions. I loved to explore their young minds and read their inquisitive (询问的) faces when a particular topic seemed hard. It was extremely challenging to motivate them to participate, think critically, question and also respect others’ points of view. Though few things never seemed easy, it was extremely exciting to make them believe that they really can. That is the reason I love to teach.

There is no point destroying your peace of mind and happiness by taking the wrong job. Society may pressure you into grabbing (抓住) whatever you can get. If you do not have a set path that must be taken, then you have the opportunity to choose something you will not only be paid for doing, but enjoy.
One of the best ways of finding a suitable career is to determine your personality type. It may seem obvious that the creative (创造性的) type does not really find much pleasure in a job as a butcher (屠夫) or dry cleaning assistant (助手), and that weak character may not find happiness in a career based on teaching or leading a team.
To find the best job for your personality type, the first step is to know what and who you really are. If you already know your style, you can search for suitable employment; however, if you are uncertain, there are ways that will help you discover who and what you are. For example, an employment centre, a career adviser or an online quiz can help you.
Taking my own situation for example, am definitely (明确地) a creative type. Besides, I prefer to be my own boss or, if I cannot, at least I want to rely on a boss I truly both respect and admire. I do not like telling people what to do, or being told what to do. I do not relate well to regular 9-5 hours. I do not feel satisfied being paid a high wage for a bad job. I feel much happier at home. Combining my creativity, independence, and desire to stay at home, my ideal (理想的) career would be running home-operated- business involving (涉及) creativity. I actually happen to have chosen this solution; I am a writer, poet, author and publisher. I have suited my career to my personality type.
