When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned (指派) to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn’t play with the other kids in her class.

I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, “Shelley, now you can color in it any time.”

Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn’t know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn’t give up on her.

One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a battle (战役) for me and I fought back tears so people wouldn’t know how much I was hurting.

She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable. She said, “Thank you.” From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.

Looking back at this I’m in awe, because all I did was to help her realize that she wasn’t alone. I didn’t ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story.

Starting high school means changes in your life. Most teenagers look forward to the first day of high school, but still feel a little bit nervous. 【小题1】

Learn all that you can about your first day before the first school day. Take part in some activities that are held at the school for new students to know the school better. If parents are invited to the activities, take yours with you. Carefully look over all the materials (材料) you receive. 【小题2】

【小题3】 Buy the things suggested on your teachers’ supply lists and place your materials for each class separately. 

Keep pace with your high school workload (工作量). If you find you’re not doing well in a subject, make use of after-school study groups or ask your teacher to help you with your schoolwork. 【小题4】

There are more after-class activities in high school than in middle school, such as clubs, music and theatre groups, the students’ union, and sports teams. Make friends and take part in such school activities. 【小题5】 Ask someone in the school office about chances to take part in school activities if you don’t know how. This is a good time to do what you like and a chance to try new things. Who said school has to be all work and no play?

Our signature hand-crafted street-style tacos make an amazing meal served with our rice and beans. Our flour tortillas (墨西哥薄馅饼) are made from scratch on-site and make our burritos better than any you’ve ever had.

With delicious Indian-style curries, oven-baked naan bread (印度烤饼), and sides like chana dal (印度的一种豆类菜品), goda masala (马萨辣调味酱) cauliflower (花椰菜), Tamarind’s menu warms the soul on the coldest of winter days.
