It was New Year’s Eve. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night, so I thought Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Dress yourself warmly. It’s cold out.”

Outside, I became even more annoyed. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Dad was pulling me out in the cold. Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. I unwillingly climbed up beside Dad, the cold already biting me. We pulled in front of the woodshed(柴棚),and started loading (装载)wood. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you been by Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked.

Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her and three children to raise on her own. “Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile, trying to find a few pieces of wood. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.”

That was all he said. Dad then went to the smokehouse and took down a side of bacon, telling me to go load it. He returned carrying a large bag of flour(面粉) over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand. “What’s in the little bag?” I asked. “Shoes . They’re out of shoes. I got the children a box of candies, too. It just wouldn’t be New Year without some candy. ”I tried to think through what Dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could give some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why should we care?

We unloaded the wood behind the Clarks’ house and knocked on the door. It opened a crack(缝隙), and a fearful voice said, “Who is it?” “James Cotton, ma’am, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Could we come in for a bit?”

One winter, my father persuaded my mother to agree with his plan to take us to go ice fishing, thinking this would bring back a great experience, even though we might not catch any fish. My mother was against his idea at first because she was frightened of the thought that someone might fall into the water in such freezing weather. But she had to give in finally.

After making all the preparations, my parents, my brother and I took our fishing house and set off. To get to the destination, we had to cross the Mississippi River and go up a large hill. But we still excitedly headed for our destination, knowing there would be much excitement waiting for us.

Our favorite fishing spot was across the lake. Our fishing house was large enough to allow the four of us to fish at the same time. We managed to find a suitable place for ice fishing, where my dad could drill holes through the ice. We sat shoulder to shoulder in comfort. You might think ice fishing would be cold, but we had a small stove inside. Even when the temperature stayed below zero we could fish without coats on. The day passed with a mix of quiet time and family chatter. We talked about fish, music and news some times. And of course, we shared fishing advice such as waiting patiently and staying calm while fishing. Dad was the one that caught the most fish among us, so he taught us when to pull the line, methods of attaching the fish food, the den the hook and more.

My brother and I also took breaks and explored the snow and ice near the fishing house. We found many interesting shapes in the ice. Wherever the snow wasn’t too deep, I'd try skiing. I exactly knew it would scare the fish under the ice away, so I tried my best not to make any loud sound. However, while I was skiing on the ice, I heard a sound of crack(破裂) coming.

As children, my brothers and I constantly annoyed our mother. When we combined forces, we had the power to make that sweet, loving woman go mad.

One day, I arrived home from school feeling overheated, exhausted, and angry with my brothers for being kicked out of the car and walking home alone. Taking a few steps inside, I dropped my books and realized the house was a little too quiet. Looking around, my anger turned to weariness, and suddenly I felt a fierce stream of water glide across my shirt. Before I realized what happened, another blasted me directly in the face. I dove behind the couch as I heard my brothers yell, “Water fight!”

Running to the other side of the room where my own water gun was hidden beneath a loose floorboard, loaded and ready to go, I grabbed it and congratulated myself on being prepared in advance.

Instantly, my anger with my brothers disappeared, and I eagerly joined in the water spraying. We didn’t stop until we were nearly wet all over and out of water. Calling a truce, we decided to team up and take on a larger, more dangerous enemy. While taking turns reloading our weaponry, we hatched our plan.

Our mother was outside watering the garden, totally unaware of the danger approaching her from behind. We silently counted to three and began showering her with water. She turned around and stood still as we finished the last of our supply. Only when she thought our guns were empty did she dare to speak a word. However, when she began to lecture us, a water ‘bullet’ shot from my gun, smacking(猛击) her right eye, and she lost her temper.

We ran to the living room with our mother close behind and barely reached the door in time to shut her out. She began pounding on it and shouting at us to let her in, but we had no idea that this was all an act. She actually had her own plan.

Anna took her first baby-sitting job in Peter Smith’s and played games with Peter’s three children until the bedtime. Mr. Smith praised her for the great work. After Mrs. Smith had pressed the money into her hand, Anna didn’t even look at the money and then walked out of the house. She’d expected ten dollars. Now she saw that it was a one-hundred-dollar bill!

Anna imagined her parents’ faces when she handed them the one hundred dollars.

Things hadn’t been easy for Anna’s family since Anna’s dad had lost his engineering job a year ago. There had been no new clothes or movies in the last year. They no longer went out to eat on Fridays. Anna didn’t really mind, as long as her family was together. But now she could help. One hundred dollars! That was enough to fill the car with gas or to buy a bag of groceries.

Her excitement faded as she wondered if Mrs. Smith realized how much money she had given her. Could she have made a mistake? Anna felt bad as she remembered that Mrs. Smith had simply pulled the money from her purse without looking at it.

Anna thought, “Maybe Mrs. Smith meant to give me the one-hundred-dollar bill. Baby-sitting three children is a lot of work.” Soon Anna remembered that the Smiths didn’t seem to have much money, either. But, she silently argued with herself. “They gave me the money. I didn’t steal it.”

She found her parents in the living room. Anna took a deep breath and told them what had happened. “I wanted to give the money to you to help out the family, but I think Mrs. Smith made a mistake.” She continued. “I’m going to give it back to her.”

Dad settled his big hand on her shoulder. “You just gave us the best gift, Anna.” Mom kissed her. “We’re proud of you, sweetheart.”
