Brriiinnng... ... The alarm clock announces the start of another busy weekday in the morning. You jump out of bed, rush into the shower, into your clothes and out the door with hardly a moment to think. A stressful journey to work gets your blood pressure climbing. Once at the   office, you glance through the newspaper with depressing stories or reports of disasters. In that sort of mood, who can get down to work, particularly some creative, original problem-solving work?

The way most of us spend our mornings is exactly opposite to the conditions that promote flexible,open-minded thinking. Imaginative ideas are most likely to come to us when we’re unfocused. If you are one of those energetic morning people, your most inventive time comes in the early evening when you are relaxed. Sleepy people’s lack of focus leads to an increase in creative problem solving. By not giving yourself time to tune into your wandering mind, you’re missing out on the surprising solutions it may offer. The trip you take to work doesn’t help, either. The stress slows down the speed with which signals travel between neurons(神经细胞),making inspirations less likely to occur. And while we all should read a lot about what’s going on in the world, it would not make you feel good for sure, so put that news website or newspaper aside until after the day’s work is done.

So what would our mornings look like if we wanted to start them with a full capacity for creative problem solving? We’d set the alarm a few minutes early and lie awake in bed, following our thoughts where they lead. We'd stand a little longer under the warm water of the shower, stopping thinking about tasks in favor of a few more minutes of relaxation. We’d take some deep breaths on our way to work, instead of complaining about heavy traffic. And once in the office —we’d click on links not to the news of the day but to the funniest videos the web has to offer.

There's more evidence that what's good for your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity (中等强度)exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.

“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better," said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it's not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don't count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss, Wright' s team reported in the journal Neurology.

The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.

“We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive people when comparing the results," the study team wrote.

Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer's disease but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people's memory function.

【小题1】What's true about the study?
A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C.High-intensity exercise is better.
D.Ten people scored best on the tests.
【小题2】How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A.By observing people exercise.B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison.D.By doing a brain MRI.
【小题3】What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Exercise will definitely strengthen people's memory.
B.Alzheimer's disease may be held back by moderate intensity exercise.
C.Exercise can put off the beginning of memory decline.
D.The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
【小题4】What's the best title for this passage?
A.How to keep health.
B.Ways to make your brain work better.
C.To exercise or not.
D.Moderate intensity exercises keeps your brain younger.

A new study has found that cats can connect with people in the same way as dogs and children. The research, published in Current Biology, suggests the social abilities of cats to form human attachments has been greatly underestimated. The study notes that more cats live with humans than dogs do worldwide. But historically, more scientific research has centered on the social relationships between people and dogs.

The researchers designed experiments similar to methods used to measure human attachment behaviors. For example, other studies have observed how babies react to being reunited with caregivers after being separated for short periods.

About 70 cats were studied. The hehavior of the animals was observed by experts who divided them into two groups.64 percent were judged to be “securely attached”to caregivers, while 36 percent were found to be “insecurely attached.”The cats with secure attachments showed several signs of “reduced stress”levels, the study found. These cats were found to be more comfortable and effectively balanced their attention between the person and their surroundings. However, the cats with an insecure attachment showed clear signs of stress. These included shaking of the tail, repeated licking or staying completely away from the caregiver.

She added that the results showed that the level of secure and insecure attachments in cats is very close to those measured in human babies. In humans, research has found that 65 percent of babies are also securely attached to their caregivers. The researchers also were interested in finding out if socialization training would change the results.

But after a six-week training program for the cats, there were no major differences. “Once an attachment style has been established between the cat and its caregiver, it appears to remain relatively stable overtime, even after a training and socialization intervention(干预), ”Vitale   said.

【小题1】What does the study mentioned in this passage show?
A.Cats’social ability is little thought of.
B.Dogs have more sociable personalities than cats.
C.Historically, dog is much smarter than cats.
D.Cats have bad social relationships with dogs.
【小题2】What will happen if the cats feel unsafe?
A.They tend to attack their caregivers.
B.They are going to shake their tails.
C.They will stay close to their caretakers.
D.They are likely to balance their attention.
【小题3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Attachment level in babies is higher than in cats.
B.Training program plays an important role in the results.
C.Researchers feel insecure when experimenting with cats.
D.It’s hard to make changes to attachment styles between cats and caregivers.

Does using an eco-friendly paper straw (吸管) give you a good feeling because you’re doing something for the environment? “Straws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often advertised as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic,” says researcher Dr. Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp. “However, the presence of PFAS in these straws means that could be discredited.”

PFAS chemicals, infamous for their longevity and potential harm, can adversely affect humans, wildlife and the environment. They biodegrade (生物降解) very slowly over time and can persist over thousands of years in the environment, a property that has led to them being known as “forever chemicals”. They are linked to various health issues, including thyroid disease, liver damage, kidney cancer and so on. Furthermore, these chemicals are used in everyday items, such as outdoor clothing and non-stick pans, to make them water and heat-resistant.

For a more in-depth analysis, the research team purchased 39 different brands of drinking straws made from five materials — paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel and plastic, and then conducted two rounds of testing for PFAS. They found that most brands (69%) contained PFAS, with 18 different PFAS detected in total. In paper straws, PFAS was detected in 90% of the brands tested. PFAS was also detected in 80% of brands of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straw brands and 40% of glass straw brands. They were not detected in any of the five types of steel straws tested.

“The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws shows they are not necessarily biodegradable,” says Dr. Groffen. “We did not detect any PFAS in stainless steel straws, so I would advise consumers to use this type of straw — or just avoid using straws.”

The PFAS concentrations (浓度) were low and, considering that most people only use straws occasionally, pose a limited risk to human health. However, PFAS can remain in the body for many years and concentrations can build up over time. “Small amounts of PFAS, while not harmful in themselves, can add to the chemical load already present in the body,” Dr. Groffen concludes.

【小题1】What does the underlined word “discredited” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Plain.B.Relevant.
C.Doubtful.D.Forceful.
【小题2】Why are PFAS chemicals known as “forever chemicals”?
A.They are resistant to water and heat.
B.They take a long time to break down.
C.They exist widely in daily necessities.
D.They may cause various common diseases.
【小题3】What can we know from the test for PFAS?
A.PFAS was found in all five types of straws.
B.Paper straws were most likely to contain PFAS.
C.Stainless steel straws are harmless to human health.
D.Glass straws were the most environmentally friendly straws.
【小题4】What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the potential risks of PFAS.
B.To show approaches to using straws safely.
C.To present the advantages of stainless steel straws.
D.To appeal to consumers to avoid using straws in daily life.
