Who needs friends? According to most psychologists (心理学家) we all do, especially nowadays when so many other aspects (方面) of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us both healthy and happy.

The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us. Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice, comfort and security. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.

Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together,” says Rowe. If the couple do not make some change, they will either get tired of each other and break up or stay together and seek friendship with others.

But is friendship equally important to women and men? According to author Rhonda Pritchard, women are more likely than men to have close friends. “ You tell a friend things that you’d never tell a partner”,says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friend. Men share time and activities like building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or watching football, but they don’t often share their feelings.

Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the breakup of a close friend as painful as the end of a marriage.

Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the perfect situation is to have your family there for as well. Friendships and family relationships can both change, but a friend will not consider you when making really important decisions in the same way that a family member will.

How to Make Friends at Community College

Making friends in community college is a bit trickier than in four-year schools in some cases. Students don’t typically dorm at community colleges, so there isn’t always a shared living environment.【小题1】Here’s a look at how to make friends at a community college.

Get hired on campus

While working part-time, most initial engagement involves assisting students with their needs. For example, if you work in the bookstore, the conversational icebreaker usually focuses on finding out what the other students need to find. Previously, you may have only had opportunities to socialize with other students in your classes.【小题2】.

Attend events

【小题3】. Whether it’s special lectures, career fairs, musical performances, or anything else, these occasions bring students together outside of the classroom. By participating in activities that correspond to their hobbies or preferences, you and your peers can meet other like-minded students. Plus, the event can be an initial topic of conversation, giving your peers an easy way to engage with others.

【小题4】

College work will occupy most of your day. Your health, for one, is something you may start to neglect as you throw yourself fully into college life. Needless to say, ignoring your health is absolutely unacceptable.【小题5】. You can start with your pal by heading over to your school’s gym or fit-ness center and try meeting new people there.

Mark Smith and Jarryd Haines are good friends. The two boys from Sydney have known each other for most of their lives. Both of them enjoy playing Australian football.

A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed brain cancer. The disease robbed the boy of his sight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Jarryd remained his closest friend. They still share their love of Australian football. And they still enjoy talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.

Two weeks ago, I took my seat at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Swans. The old stadium was crowded with fans. Shortly into the second quarter, heard some great commentary(实况报道) from a boy. Play by play, Jarryd was bringing the game to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him.

Although he cannot see anymore, Mark still loves the Swans very much. Usually, he goes to the stadium and listens to the commentary on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio system broke down. That was when his friend Jarryd stepped in.

I hardly looked at the Swans and Buddy, the team’s star player. Instead, I was focusing on Jarryd and Mark. “What’s happening now, mate?” Mark asked. “Don’t worry. Mark,” Jarryd replied. “Okay. Buddy’s got it. Will he go for it? He’s going for it! It’s his tenth goal! Buddy is on fire!” Mark listened carefully. He was lost in the magic of Australian football brought to life by his friend.

Sports can be competitive. However, they can also allow us to share wonderful moments with others, may they be close friends or perfect strangers. Here, Jarryd and Mark have moved me, and perhaps some other spectators(观众), with the best commentary.

Dear Kitty,

When I looked into the candle this evening, I felt peaceful and happy. Oma seems to be in the candle and it is Oma too who shelters and protects me and who always makes me feel happy again.

But …there is someone else who governs all my feelings and that is…Peter. When I went up to get potatoes today and was standing on the stepladder with the pan, he at once asked, “What have you been doing since lunch?” I went and sat on the steps and we started talking. At a quarter past five (an hour later), the potatoes, which had been sitting on the floor in the meantime, finally reached their places.

Peter didn't say another word about his parents; we just talked about books and about the past. The boy has such warmth in his eyes; I believe I'm pretty near to being in love with him. He talked about that this evening. I went into his room, after peeling the potatoes, and said that I felt so hot.

“You can tell what the temperature is by Margot and me; if it's cold we are white, and if it is hot we are red in the face,” I said.

“In love?” he asked.

“Why should I be in love?” My answer was rather silly.

“Why not?” he said, and then we had to go for supper.

Would he have meant anything by that question? I finally managed to ask him today whether he didn't find my silly talk; he only said, “It's okay, I like it!”

Was this answer just shyness? I am not able to tell.

Kitty, I'm just like someone in love, who can only talk about her darling. And Peter really is a darling too. But I'm quite good at looking after myself, and knows that very well. And he likes his quietness, so I have no idea how much he likes me. In any case, we are getting to know each other a bit. I wish we dared to tell each other a bit. I wish we dared to tell each other much more already. Who knows, the time may come sooner than I think! I get an understanding look from him about twice a day, I smile back, and we both feel happy.

I certainly seem quite crazy to be talking about him being happy, and yet I feel pretty sure that he thinks just the same as I do.

Yours,

Anne
