Small talk – the likes of “What do you have there? Popcorn?” or “The weather today is beautiful, isn’t it?” – is meaningless and a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.

One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to the stranger sitting beside you can be scary, because you know the conversation is sure to be awkward. But a study by the University of Chicago in the US found that people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or occupy themselves with their phones.

In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start conversations with fellow travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because they expected not to get a friendly answer. But the result turned out to be just the opposite – most strangers were not only willing to be talked to, but also pleasant to talk to.

“Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the lead researchers, told Live Science. “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they’d like to get to know you.”

Apart from making you happier, small talk with strangers can also help you feel connected to your surroundings. Previous studies found that when people are frequently smiled at, made eye contact with and spoken to at coffee shops, they tend to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being ignored and left out.

And if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something “bigger”

A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. Participants in the study – 79 college students – reported after the four-day experiment that they were much happier when they had a third as much small talk and twice as many in-depth conversations.

But deep conversations can start with small talk, can’t they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn something new from a stranger.

Here are three financial habits you might want to consider breaking.

1. Spending more than you want to earn rewards points

Provided they’re used responsibly, rewards credit cards can be a good thing. However, if you find yourself using a credit card just to get more points, you might be in for a world of trouble. One way you can break this bad habit is to only use your rewards card for regular, monthly expenses. Let’s say you decide to leave your card at home and only use it to make payments on your phone bill, which you then pay back in full every month.

2. Ignoring your bills

Coming home to a big pile of bills is a drag. There’s no doubt about it. But tossing them onto the coffee table and ignoring them for weeks on end can have terrible consequences for your financial well-being. Whenever you find yourself faced with a bill, do with it immediately. While it might be a bit of a struggle at first, over time you can get the rewards of having less financial stress.

3. Cycling your debt without fixing the real problem

While having a lower interest rate can help solve short-term problems for you, you could be avoiding the fundamental issue. In fact, it might even be keeping you from coming to terms with the behaviour that is forcing you into a state of debt. Building a budget(预算) could help you uncover ways to cut back and save.

For most of us, changing our behaviour isn’t as simple as turning off a switch, so it may take a lot of time and effort. Starting is the hardest part but, I can assure(保证) you—it gets easier with time.

Post 1 Steve, USA
Hi, everyone,

What would you miss most and least if you were stuck on a desert island? For me, it would be the changing seasons , especially the fall in New England. Sure, it would be fantastic to have non-stop sun, but I’d miss the color of the seasons. I guess this will sound stupid but I’d probably miss the rain too. I wouldn’t miss getting up at six every day to go to work, though! What about you?

Post 2 Tomas Germany

Good question, Steve, I think I’d miss the pastries and different types of bread, and shopping at the local markets, and sausages, although I suppose I could try and make my own. So, yeah, the food. I’d miss the food most. What would I miss least? My mobile phone---I’d like to be completely uncontactable --- at least for a little while.

Post 3 Paola Italy

I would miss the company of people because I know I’d like to have someone to share experiences with. For instance, if there was a fantastic sunrise I’d want someone to be there to enjoy it with me. I’m a sociable sort of person and I’d go mad on my own. And I definitely wouldn’t miss junk mail --- I hate coming home every evening and finding a pile of junk mail in my post box.

Post 4 Miko Japan

Hi, I would miss Manga cartoons, the internet and Japanese food, like nori, sushi and Japanese beef. I’d also miss TV shows and shopping for clothes…and my two dogs. In fact, I’d miss everything.

Post 5 Roger UK

I would miss my daily newspaper and listening to the news on TV and radio. I’d feel very cut off if I didn’t know what was happening in the world. If you gave me a radio, then I’d be perfectly happy to live on a desert island for the rest of my life. What I’d miss least would be traffic jams in the city, particularly my journey to work.

A study found overweight adults lost nearly 10 lb(10磅) in 12 weeks after drinking water half an hour before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Researchers say it could provide a low-cost solution to Britain’s increasing obesity crisis.

They conducted an experiment and the obese adults experimented were given a weight management consultation. They were advised on changing their lifestyle and diet and how to improve their levels of physical activity. Half were asked to drink water before meals and half were just asked to imagine that they had a full stomach before eating. The first group lost 2 lb 14 oz more than the second group, on average. Sparkling water(苏打水), sodas and sweetened drinks were not allowed and participants drank plain tap water.

Helen Parretti, Doctor of the National Institute for Health Research at the University of Birmingham and lead author of the research, said, "The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity. Just drinking a pint (品脱) of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight.

"When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss at a healthy rate. It’s something that doesn’t take much work in our busy everyday lives."

Many weight-loss plans advise people to drink water, but no previous studies directly tested this.

Last night Tam Fry said, "There is a widely held view that simple tap water is plain boring and couldn’t possibly help you feel full — but it does."

Dr. Louis Levy, head of nutrition science at Public Health England, said, "Thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. "He added. "While water does not cause you to lose weight, it does keep you hydrated (含水的) and might help you to eat less."
