Growing up, I thought math class was something to be endured, not enjoyed. I disliked memorizing formulas(公式) and taking tests, all for the dull goal of getting a good grade. One of my teachers told my mother that I was “slow”. But my problem wasn't with math itself. In fact, when a topic seemed particularly interesting, I would go to the library and read more about it.

By high school, no one told me that I could become a professional mathematician. What I wanted to do then was to play college football. My ambition was to get an athletic scholarship to attend a Big Ten school.

The chances of that happening were very low. But that didn’t stop my coaches from encouraging me to believe I could reach my goal, and preparing and pushing me to work for it. They made video tapes of my performances and sent them to college coaches around the country. In the end, a Big Ten school, Penn State, did offer me a scholarship.

I wish math teachers were more like football coaches. Students are affected by more than just the quality of a lesson plan. They also respond to the passion of their teachers and the engagement of their peers, and they seek a sense of purpose. They benefit from specific instructions and constant feedback(反馈).

Until I got to college, I didn't really know what mathematics was. I still thought of it as laborious(耗时费力的) calculations. Then my professor handed me a book and suggested that I think about a particular problem. It wasn't easy, but it was fascinating. My professor kept giving me problems, and I kept pursuing them, even though I couldn’t always solve them immediately. The mathematical research I was doing had little in common with what I did in my high school classrooms. Instead, it was closer to the math and logic puzzles I did on my own as a boy. It gave me that same sense of wonder and curiosity, and it rewarded creativity. I am now a Ph. D candidate in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

One day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door (纱门) with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.

Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack in the defense against unwanted insects.

For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

My family didn’t talk much shout my grandfather when I was growing up. He had been a doctor in the British Army and served in the First World War. While many families had relatives in the British Army who fought on the front, it wasn’t something you need to talk about with pride. It’s only as an adult then that I have started to look deeper into my grandfather’s life.

After graduating from medical school in 1906,my grandfather worked as a resident surgeon at the Waterford Hospital for 12 month before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps and starting his first tour of India.

Over the next several years,he served in Rawalpindi,Ferozepore,Multan,Rangoon and Mandalay.

The First World War began on July 28,1914 and two weeks later, my grandfather was on active service in France and Belgium. He was captured(俘获)at Landrecies on October 18,1914 and was kept in prison at Sennelager Prisoner of War Camp in Germany. Following his release on June 26,1915,he returned to London.________A month later he was back on active service, first with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Malta, then Gallipoli and then back to France and Belgium25where he served as the officer commanding No. 44 Field Ambulance until near the war’s end in November 1918.

While his army records afford us a timeline on his service, they don’t show much about his experiences on the battlefield. Thankfully; the surviving sketch (素描) of him at the Battle of the Somme and the accompanying caption (说明文字) by the artist Muirhead Bone help to fill in the gaps. The original, entitled“Waiting for the Wounded”, is housed in the Imperial War Museum,London.

When I was a child, a copy of this sketch hung in my parents’ bedroom, but I didn’t know its importance. Now, as I try to know better about my grandfather, it takes on new significance for me.

Bob and Eliza Shaw started taking pictures of their son, Noah, practically from the moment he was born. When he was about three months old, Eliza noticed something strange when she took his picture. The flash on their digital camera created the typical red do t in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by something. When Eliza mentioned the strange phenomenon to their ophthalmologist (眼科医生), she shined a light into Noah’s eye and saw the same white reflection instead of a red one, which is a sign of retinal (视网膜的) cancer, and that is exactly what Noah had. He endured months of treatment, but doctors could not save his eye.

Noah’s disease would be treatable if diagnosed (诊断) early. Bob couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every baby picture of Noah he could find — thousands of them — and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently.

It was too late for Noah’s eye, but Bob was determined to put his hard-won insights to good use. He created a database that charted the cancer’s appearance in every photo. He also collected photos and data from eight other children with retinal cancer. Armed with those data, he began to work with colleagues in the computer science department to develop a smart phone App that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for the white eye spot and can be used as a kind of ophthalmoscope (眼底镜). Called White Eye Detector, it is now available for free. “I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this,” Bob told People. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only can this software save vision, but it can save lives.”
