“Mommy ,don't go,”my three-year-old son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteen-year-old leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest ,not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my leg.

“Are you mad at me too?”

“You spend all your time taking care of other people's kids, but what about us?”Dylan left angrily.

I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving live? Then the answer hit me. He didn't know bemuse he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the sores of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a   child and understood the hard truth-that without our help, the child would likely die.

“Get dressed. You are going with me.”I said.

I spend the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time.“He's seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle(奇迹) that he is still alive. ”

I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.

We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee (思乐冰饮料). He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn't about to ruin it.

I stopped at the nurse's station to check on Hector's progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”

For courage, my fingers cling to the harness (绳套)on my guide dog Cho’s broad back as we pass my neighbor’s fence. Walking by Mr. Smith’s yard is the best part of our morning walk. …and also the worst. The best part is the roses talking to us with the fragrance that bursts bold as firecrackers.

Now comes the worst part—the unfriendly figure nearby that shades us: Mr. Smith. As usual, friendly Cho wags (摇摆) her tail in excitement. But Cho doesn’t know this neighbor does not like me at all. “Hello, Mr. Smith.” I greet him as I do every morning but he never answers me. I know he’s behind his fence. He sounds out of breath, and the creaky gate swings nervously in his hand.

Maybe he’s afraid of me because I am blind. Disabilities scare grown-ups sometimes. Then I remember: Yesterday I heard him playing checkers with my friend Jimmy who’s in a wheelchair. Cho and I march on, and my thoughts keep step. Why does Mr. Smith ignore me? Why can’t two people who like roses like each other? It’s a mystery to me.

Cho and I stop for a moment near the rose bushes while I think. Dad has told me that some folks do not like people from faraway places. Maybe Mr. Smith does not like foreigners. Then, the sidewalk hums beneath my feet. A skateboard zooms by. “Hello, Mai and Cho!” my friend Jana shouts, “Hi, Mr. Smith.”

I wait. Jana is from Mexico. If Mr. Smith ignores Jana, then my mystery is solved. But his voice calls out, “Hello, Jana!” The sound of it twists my heart. Now I know that unfriendly Mr. Smith likes everyone but not me and Cho…

Me and Cho! An idea brightens my mystery. Maybe I do know why Mr. Smith doesn’t talk to me!

“Down!” I command Cho to sit on the ground.

I lead him back to Cho, and tell Mr. Smith how gentle Cho is.

Kelsey Gilland and her husband were shopping at PetSmart, looking for a company for one of their dogs, and decided to go and see if they had any adoptable cats that day. The past few times the couple had been to PetSmart hadn’t been any, but that day they were delighted to see two adorable cats hanging out. They were only going to look — but their dog Paisleigh had other plans.

As soon as Paisleigh saw one of the cats, Oliver, she was completely fascinated with him. The instant best friends interacted through the glass and seemed to have a special connection right off the bat.

“When I saw the way they reacted together my husband looked at me and said, ‘Babe, it’s an orange cat, isn’t that what you’ve been wanting?’ Everything in me said, ‘YES! Please, let’s take him home!’”

Gilland was worried about how Oliver would fit in with the family’s two other cats, though, and so the couple left PetSmart without Oliver, much to Paisleigh’s dismay.

That night, Gilland couldn’t stop thinking about Oliver. The way he and Paisleigh connected had been such magic, and she began to think that maybe he was meant to be a part of their family.

“I thought about that sweet kitty all night long and when I woke … I wanted to go back to PetSmart to see if he was still there,” Gilland said. “My husband was all for it. We got dressed and went to PetSmart, we took our own cage because we knew we were bringing him home if he was still there.”

Luckily, Oliver was still there and available for adoption. Due to COVID-19, the couple wasn’t able to do a meet and greet with Oliver before adopting him, but they decided it didn’t matter. They went with Paisleigh’s instincts and took him home.

“Not fair.” Wendi was rather angry. “You promised we could go to the climbing park.”

“But, it is going to rain, and the climbing park is outdoors.” Mum shook her head.

Wendi looked out of the window. “But it isn’t raining, just clouds.”

“The weather lady says so, and she knows, rain in the afternoon,” Mum said.

“The weather lady must get it wrong,” Wendi complained in a low voice, but suddenly, the rain started. “Oh.” Wendi was surprised, looking up at the sky.

“We’ll go to the climbing park another day.” Mum watched the rain.

“How does the weather lady know about the weather?” Wendi asked.

“Well, she has got a weather station, I think.” Mum was not sure.

“Grandpa might know. I’ll ask him tomorrow,” Wendi said.

“We can build a little weather station in the garden if you like, Wendi,” Grandpa explained. “You’ll need a wind vane (风向标) to see how the wind is blowing, and we can make it by ourselves. And we also need to prepare a rain gauge (雨量计) to measure how much rain has fallen. And, I’ve got a good thermometer (温度计) for outdoors.”

“A thermometer ... what is that?” Wendi asked.

Grandpa laughed. “A thermometer measures the temperature.”

“Thermometer.” Wendi was pleased with her new word.

“And last of all, we need a barometer (气压计). That’s a big word, too, Wendi,” Grandpa explained. “A barometer tells us what the air pressure is. I’ve got one, too.”

“But what is air pressure?” Wendi asked.

“Well, if the air pressure changes, the weather will change,” Grandpa answered.

When everything was ready, Grandpa and Wendi got down to business, and soon a little garden weather station came into being.

Grandpa gave Wendi a list and said, “You have to keep a list of all the wind, rain and temperature changes. That’s when you’ll see how the weather is changing. And then you really will be a weathergirl.”

Rainy, Windy, Sunny, Snowy, Hot, Cold, Cloudy, Stormy, Very Windy ... Wendi painted many cards for all the things a weathergirl has to say.

Hearing the news, all Wendi’s friends visited her garden weather station.
