It was her notion that boys my age needed "a good thrashing" when they misbehaved. These she administered with my belt, often for what seemed to me like small offenses 【小题1】 coming home late for supper because I was having a good time sledding on the hill. A man had a responsibility to meet his social obligations on time. Small as she was, she 【小题2】 still make the snapping belt sting when it lashed across my bared legs, but I hated the indignity of these beatings so much that I refused to satisfy her with 【小题3】 discreetly pretended show of tears.

My failure to cry during her "thrashings" fueled my mother's anger, and I knew it. Tears 【小题4】 (be) evidence that I had learned the lesson. My silent submission to her heaviest blows intensified her fury. If she had been a man she would have been able to make me cry for mercy, but because she was not, and because I did not weep, she struck 【小题5】 (hard).

I knew that faking the tears would gratify her and end the punishment, but I refused. The injustice and humiliation of 【小题6】(beat) hurt so greatly that I deliberately accepted the worst gritted my teeth and, when the belt had fallen four or five times, muttered, "That doesn't hurt me." In these moments 【小题7】 we were very close to bitter hatred of 【小题8】. We were two wills of iron. She was determined to break me: I was just as determined 【小题9】 she would not.

In the end she was the one who always cried, and then, when she had thrown the belt aside and collapsed on a chair weeping quietly, the anger and hatred instantly drained out of me, and 【小题10】 (overcome) with pity and love. I rushed to embrace and kiss her, saying "It's all right, Mama, it's all right. I'll never do it again. I promise, I'll never do it again."

I was wandering into the small store, when the store owner received a call from a customer. The customer and his wife had shopped there several months before. When noticing that his wife really liked one thing in the store, he wanted to buy it as a surprise. Because time was limited, out 【小题1】 (go) the couple without buying it. It was not until several months later that the customer wanted to buy it.

But the customer was in Tennessee, living far away from the store which was in Maine. What was more, he had been to the store several months before, and it was difficult to believe that the store owner would remember him, or 【小题2】 it was that he was referring to. There were 【小题3】 (diversity) goods in the store. The customer’s question was whether she could do it. She said yes. The store owner advised him to describe the thing for her and so he did.

【小题4】 (inform) what the thing was like, the store owner took a few close-up photos with her camera, and e-mailed them to the customer. Having received the photos, then the customer decided which one was the very thing.

Then the customer said, “Now it is time we discussed a price over the phone.” Apart 【小题5】 discussing the price, they also decided the time to send it. Then she took care of the credit card transaction(交易) online, and the customer proposed the gift 【小题6】 (send) that afternoon. Then the agreement was reached. The customer said. “I live far away from your place now. 【小题7】, I would get it myself.”

The store owner was really smart. She wasn’t necessarily 【小题8】 (talent) for new technology but she was willing to push herself to find new ways to make the transaction (交易) actually happen. It was not a dramatic thing. It was the first time she had ever done it. Never before had she done such a thing.

【小题9】 difficult it was, the store owner discovered a creative solution 【小题10】 (contribute) to a new way of doing business. In my view, we should realize that challenge and opportunity go hand in hand.
