Put down the phone and live in the moment

Have you ever unintentionally left your phone at home and wondered how you would get through the day? Baylor College of Medicine’s Dr. Jin Han explains why this might be a sign that you need to put down your phone more often.

“There has been a(n) 【小题1】 in technology as our phones have gone from just regular cell phones to smart phones that allow you to multitask all with one device,” said Han, assistant professor at Baylor. “You use your phone now to receive emails, to text and chat and to access social media platforms -- 【小题2】 your phone may be your connection to your social life.”

Although they offer many advantages, Han cautions that using your smart devices can be harmful if you use them too much. For example, using your smart phone while driving, or even walking, can cause serious accidents. Also, staring at your screen for too long can be harmful to your 【小题3】.

Being 【小题4】 too long to your phone also can impact the quality of your relationships, he said. If you are on your phone constantly and not 【小题5】 with those around you, it can take away from your relationships with your family and friends. In addition, if you are using your phone too much in front your children, then they will likely follow your lead and use their own smart devices rather than 【小题6】 with you.

“ In the end, the question is how you balance using your phone while not negatively 【小题7】 your health.” Han said. “Anything that you are doing to the 【小题8】 is no healthy anymore. While it is going to be almost impossible not to use this technology, we have t create a behavior that is healthy.”

To help 【小题9】 the time you spend on your phone, Han offered the following tips:

Limit the time spent on your phone: Set up certain time that you allow yourself to be on the phone.

Do not use your phone at night: Being on your phone late into the night can make it harder for you to fall asleep and wake up the next day. Restricting your phone use at night can help you 【小题10】 a healthy sleep behavior.

Apps that can help you monitor the time you spend online are already available, but people with a tech addiction (上瘾) need more help than they provide. With his patients who are tech addicts, Dr Richard Graham, 【小题1】 of Technology Addiction Service of the Nightingale Hospital in London, usually starts with a 72-hour tech detox (脱瘾), which involves a trip【小题2】 away from your tech products. This is assumed to be quite 【小题3】 as few of us can actually live without technology for very long, so the next step is to carry out the detox in a controlled way.

The detox   【小题4】 powerful for his patients, as Graham has found. Since he started his tech-addiction service in 2010, he’s found that if parents【小题5】 take their tech-addicted child away for a weekend or a long holiday without taking any devices along the trip, the results can be 【小题6】 . After 72 hours or perhaps a week without tech — and with more sleep, and reduced social anxiety — many patients find they can let go of their fears of missing out. This allows them to take a more【小题7】 view of the importance of their devices in their lives, Graham says.

After the detox, the devices will eventually be 【小题8】 on again. And then the notifications will start up, demanding instant action and attention. But Graham stresses the value and importance of tech detox 【小题9】 people’s eventual coming back to a world full of tech devices. “In the fight of man versus machine, I think being able to put your smartphone down for a few days and just get a sense of what it’s actually like to feel different again is really helpful,” Graham stresses.

It’s unlikely that many of us will be throwing away our smartphones anytime soon. But scheduling some time away from our devices — whether that’s an hour, a day, or an entire weekend — could surely【小题10】 us all.
