Digital devices are great, but they can also be annoying when it comes to writing or drawing. Most of the time you must rely on your fingertips to do the typing or drawing for you, and what you wanted to write or draw might not come out the way you imagined. A new pen called “Phree”, created by Israeli company called OTM Technologies, aims to change the dependency that most of us have when it comes to writing or drawing in digital form.

The Phree pen looks a lot like a regular pen in both size and shape. The difference is that you can use the Phree pen to write on any surface (from a table to a wall), and then transfer that writing directly to your target device.

Phree uses a sensor called a 3D laser interferometer (激光干涉仪). The laser beams are projected (投影) on the surface and they will be reflected back to the interferometer. By analyzing these beams’ tracks, the laser interferometer measures the hand motion while writing.

The pen connects with your phone via a Bluetooth. Phree can be used to take notes using various applications on the target device. The notes will appear on the target device whenever you open it. You can even receive, write and send text messages using the device display (显示装置) and it can function as an earphone. Phree can also be used as a regular computer mouse whenever it is connected to a target device. The device can also be used as ID equipment as it can precisely analyze the way a person writes.

“We see Phree as a standard input device in the mobile world, in the same way the mouse became a standard part of PC use. We also see benefits to emerging technologies like AR and VR headsets, interactive TV, and IoT (Internet of Things ).” Gilad Lederer, co-founder of OTM Technologies said.

Alba Renai, an attractive digital influencer (网红) powered by artificial intelligence, has recently announced that she will be hosting a special section on Spain’s popular reality show “Survivor”.

Created in the fall of last year by Be a Lion, Alba Renai quickly became a superstar online, attracting over 10,000 fans. She is a beautiful young woman, but she is not actually real.

Most people started speaking highly of Alba about her looks, wishing her luck in her new position, and most likely not even realizing she was an AI-powered avatar (化身), and some expressed their concern about such digital avatars occupying human jobs. In Asia, for example, several countries have been experimenting with Al newscasters.

Be a Lion, the company that created and trained: Alba Renai, recently claimed that their avatar didn’t steal any human jobs. On the contrary, it actually created more jobs. A team of 32 people works directly on the Alba project, including Al experts, engineers, producers, filmmakers, and community managers. “Alba is a collaborative (协作的) work between humans and machines,” Luis Movilla, a director at Be a Lion, said. “Now humans must have certain skills to be able to operate technological advances. We have had to redevelop the educational plan of our own employees and in the labor market.”

Alba Renai is one of several virtual influencers to attract international attention in the last few months, alongside Aitana Lopez and Lexi Love, to name just a couple of the most popular ones, but there is an entire wave of AI-powered avatars being developed as a way to cut costs. Advances in digital technology, including computers, smartphones, and mobile apps, have changed the way people communicate and learn at home and in classrooms around the world. Now, an international team of researchers are working to ensure that this changing educational landscape will help to support literacy (读写能力) in deaf children. “We’re using digital technology to encourage children to learn,” said Leandro F1órez-Aristizábal.

Leandro and his co-workers are working to design and test a storytelling app for sign language-speaking deaf children. They began by designing a series of black and white cards describing images. A single student would change the order of the cards he or she chose and then tell the story to the rest of the class through sign language.

The researchers conducted a case study with 5th graders. One thing that attracted the researchers as they watched the performances was the response of other students in the classroom. As one student was chosen to change the order of the cards, other students got up and began offering suggestions about a general storyline.

Then, the researchers added details and colors to the cards and tested those out with kids. Finally, they changed the colorful cards to digital form. And the kids appeared to love it. The researchers reported that children’s motivation (动力) increased when technology was part of the activity. They had more impressive performances.

While their original target audience at the moment are deaf children, Leandro says the app might also find use as a means for hearing kids to learn sign language. “We started with deafness, but we don’t want to stop there,” Leandro said. “We want to invite other researchers to join us on this journey and to help us develop improved functions to serve other disabilities and other educational goals. In this way, we’re trying to fill the gap with them. Finally, we want to forget about disabilities and think about different abilities.”

【小题1】How did Leandro and his co-workers carry out their study?
A.By testing deaf children’s learning habits.B.By inviting students to design images.
C.By introducing a new sign language.D.By taking a storytelling approach.
【小题2】What interested the researchers about the students in the study?
A.They were full of curiosity.B.They were good storytellers.
C.They actively helped each other.D.They had an excellent memory.

A.Kids preferred to play fun games before class.
B.Deaf kids could communicate with others well.
C.Digital technology benefited the kids’ performances.
D.Digital technology took kids’ attention away from their studies.
【小题4】What does Leandro mainly want to express in the last paragraph?
A.He plans to widen the usage of the app.
B.He is faced with new challenges in the research.
C.He expects other researchers to play a leading role.
D.He calls on people to care about disabled children.

Smart devices have become an everyday part of our lives. A smart refrigerator can go above and beyond simply keeping our food cool.

A smart refrigerator is any refrigerator that’s equipped with a Wifi connection. It can share information about itself, be a real-time camera that lets users see what’s inside while at the supermarket, or act as a digital command center for the home. Some other things smart fridges are able to do include raising or lowering the temperature at the sound of your voice or with your phone, or helping you track the contents of your fridge so you don’t run into a milk shortage emergency.

Smart fridges can be particularly good at keeping food cool. It’s easier to adjust the temperature if it is higher than it should be because the door is left slightly open. This can make a difference in your energy bills and the quality and lifespan(寿命)of your food.

Many of the smart fridge’s features can also save you time when you’re rushing to get ready in the morning, or help you adjust your fridge when out of the house with a few taps on your phone screen. The people who will benefit most from a smart fridge are probably those who have children who might be using the fridge while parents are at work. It’s another way you can keep an eye on what’s going on at home when you’re not there. However, prices do tend to run higher than traditional fridges.

If you already have a food organizational system that’s working very well for you, and you are cool with the way your fridge is handling your food, then a smart fridge may not be worth it Contrarily, if the smart fridge’s features mentioned above sound like they would make your life easier, then one could be worth the extra money.

【小题1】What can a smart refrigerator do?
A.Order food.B.Record the contents inside.
C.Deal with emergency.D.Share information with supermarkets.
【小题2】The smart refrigerator is ______.
A.convenient but power-consumingB.child-friendly but noisy
C.time-saving but unsafeD.energy-saving but expensive
【小题3】Where does the text most probably come from?
A.A poster.B.A magazine.
C.A novel.D.A guide book.
【小题4】What might be the best title for the text?
A.The road to a smart home
B.Smart devices to make life easier
C.How smart are smart refrigerators?
D.Smart fridges—where are they leading us?
