Stanley Martin Lieber was born in Manhattan, NY on December 28, 1922.Upon graduating from De Witt Clinton High School, the 16-year-old boy was hired at what was then called Timely Comics. The company was best known for inexpensive fiction, or magazines. In 1941, when given his first chance to author a story—a short text for Captain America, he signed his name as “Stan Lee”. However, the pseudonym stuck, and soon after, became his legal name.

Promoted to the editor of the comic book division at the age of 19, Lee spent the next decade writing a variety of styles. In the late 1950s, knowing his common writing career, Lee was considering leaving when he was asked to create a superhero character to compete with DC Comics’ successful Justice League.

Lee partnered Jack Kirby to launch the Fantastic Four. The comic book was an instant hit, leading to the development of other superhero characters such as Iron Man, and Spider-man. Unlike previous superheroes who were described as perfect, Lee’s creations were provided with human faults, thus making them more related to fans.

In 1972, Lee, by then the publisher of marvel, gave up editorial control to spend time promoting the company. While television shows featuring Marvel characters like Spider-Man and the Hulk did well, achieving success on the big screen proved difficult. It was not until 2000 with the release of The X-man, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, lan Mekellen, and Halle Berry, that Marvels superheroes became a hit on the big screen. This was also the first time Lee had began the much- -loved tradition of making cameo (客串演出) appearances in the movies. In 2009, the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel and lifted up the superhero world further with summer blockbusters like The Avengers.

Though Lee is no longer with us, his larger-than-life personality, fun-loving wit, and charm will be remembered for generations to come.

In a close-up (特写), one man is pulling the other with all his strength through the window of an SUV, a type of vehicle, which is stuck dangerously on a cliff (悬崖) 30 feet above a busy roadway.

Jason Warnock, then 29, is the man performing the life-saving action. He was driving in Lewiston, Idaho, in April 2015 when he came upon a fallen tree in the middle of the road. “I was like, ‘What happened’?” he told a news website. Warnock stretched out his neck to stare up the side of a cliff. At the very top, where the tree should have been, was an SUV swinging on the edge, held back from falling to the road by a delicate, heavily damaged chain-link fence. Looking inside the car, Warnock could see a panicked Matthew Sitko, 23, beating on the passenger-side window.

That’s when Warnock sprang into action. He crossed a nearby footbridge, and climbed up the cliff to get to the vehicle. When Warnock got to the car, he tried breaking the window with a tool he had on him, only to realize that his cracking was shaking the car and might cause it to slip down the hill. He stopped and turned to calming Sitko enough to get him to open the window. “Give me your hand,” Warnock said. “If this thing goes, I want to have a hold of you so I can at least get you out of there.” Before reaching for the lifeline, Sitko had one request: “Can I grab my phone?” Soon enough, Warnock had freed both man and his machine.

According to the Lewiston police chief, the accident was caused when Sitko, who suffered only minor injuries, lost control of his car. For his part, Warnock insisted he came to Sitko’s aid for one simple reason: “I just did what anyone would do.”

Stewart, a California vet at an animal shelter, makes calls to pet owners who have no place to call home again. He has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He’s helped roughly 400 animals since 2011, mostly dogs but also a few cats.

It all started in 2011, and the Great Recession (大萧条) had spilled a lot of unfortunate people onto the streets. A small dog sat in a homeless man’s lap. Stewart noticed its signs of an allergic reaction to fleas. He approached the man and offered to bring flea medication for the dog’s skin. The man said after the treatment, his dog was soon restored to health.

Since then, Stewart has often been found wandering dark alleyways (小巷) and underpass, anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out. Stewart pays for almost all of the expenses out of his own pocket.

As for the question whether the homeless should even have pets, Stewart determines that more than anybody, they need a pet and deserve a pet and the owner is the pet’s home. There’s one more pressing reason for the homeless to have their pets. “I can’t tell you how many times people told me their animals are their reason for getting up in the morning,” Stewart says.

One of those people is Joe, a white-haired middle-aged man who has landed on rough times. He says that his black-and-white mixed breed is his life. “When I first hit the streets, I was almost to the point where I had given up,” he says. “It is so lucky to have somebody like Dr. Stewart come out here to take care of my dog, which matters a lot”.

“When you give back, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it,” Stewart says.
