Dave Wardell’s breath came thick and fast as he struggled to keep up. In the dark alley ahead, he could make out the shape of the fleeing suspect(嫌疑人),with his police dog, Finn. The 16-year-old boy they were chasing was suspected of armed robbery, but Dave wasn’t too worried. He and Finn had been in similar situations dozens of times, and they knew exactly what to do. They were a brilliant team. Police dogs like Finn follow a lengthy training program, learning skills such as how to trace a suspect’s scent(气味)for up to four miles and how to chase and catch a suspect. In seven years, Finn had helped bring more than 200 criminals. He was brave, bold and curious, and would do anything to protect his master.

Dave thought that night would be no different. Up ahead, he saw the suspect throw himself over a fence. Finn was on him in a second, pulling him back down. In a moment of absolute horror, Dave saw him pull a long piece of bloody metal from Finn’s chest, Dave realized it was a 10-inch hunting knife. Finn was in pain, but didn’t let go of the boy’s leg.

Dave just had time to hit an emergency button on his radio. The suspect, on the fence, pulled the knife up high and aimed at Dave’s neck. In an instant, Finn jumped between them, and the knife came crashing down on Finn’s head and Dave’s hand. Straight away, Finn got hold of the boy again. Dave caught the attacker and threw him on the ground so he let go of the knife.

In time, officers surrounded the attacker, pinning him to the floor. Dave gave Finn the signal to let go, and only then did Finn drop his head to the ground.

Looking back on the first twenty years of my life, I feel grateful to have been so healthy and happy. For my happiness, I am grateful to so many people and lucky events, but what have guided me and supported me in my life are my physical health, healthy finances, and my family’s happiness.

Health comes first for me, because without health everything else is meaningless. Imagine starting a career without good health. Imagine starting a family without good health. Imagine achieving anything without good health. Clearly, good health is the first necessary for other part of one’s life.

Good health is not enough to be happy. We still need to have money in today’s society. Money obviously pays for basic needs of life — food, housing, clothing — but it is also necessary for other reason like the quality of our education and medical care.

Next comes the most important thing in having a happy life — our family. It provides the love, joy and support that everybody needs. I love my family with all my heart. I get pleasure from their pleasure. I suffer when they suffer. My family helped me get through the hard times of entrance exams. They comforted and advised me when I had misunderstanding with my friends. More importantly, they have been there to share in my successes in the past twenty years. In summary, all these are what I need and want in this world. As long as I stay healthy, earn enough money, and share both good times and bad times with my family, I will always be the happiest girl in the world.

Mr. Brown worked in a factory of a small town. He had been there for twenty years before one day he was sent to the capital for important business. He was quite excited because he had never been there before. Before he set off, he asked his wife and three daughters if they wanted him to buy something for them in London. For some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then from across the street someone came walking.
It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the smooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard.
She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.
