A pretty girl with a red helmet was riding a motorcycle ahead, she was wearing a short pink dress and purple pants, the back of her dress swinging in the wind like small pink flags. It is not rare to see women wearing such fancy garments nowadays. But this young woman was in style in every way.

I suddenly thought of my wife. She had been dreaming of getting a bag which she said she had seen on the Internet. She had already got our son to place an order for it. It should arrive at any time.

“Is your delivery to reach us today or tomorrow?” I asked.

“I have no idea. But don’t worry. Our child is sure to watch it.”

Soon we turned our way onto the Hilton Thoroughfare(大道), the stylishly dressed girl gave way to us standing aside, at the same time waiting for the traffic light to change. Obviously she was going in the direction of another place.

“You know that girl?” asked my wife, seeing my eyes still fixed upon the girl in fashion.

“No. I was thinking how you look in a pink dress while hanging about in a botanic(植物的) garden.”

“You were kidding me, knowing I’m not fit for such clothing.” retorted my wife.

“It will make you look much younger. You were always a lovely pretty girl at her age.”

“I’m not what I used to be.” she laughed out loud.

The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to set her to school. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development.

As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house had been victims(牺牲品). Then this happened. My child’s language delay(语言发育迟缓)was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be rescued.

I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with my little girl as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me. “You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber.” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today she did it!”

He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest! “She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain.

As she ran toward me. I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a Hero.

My granddaughter entertains herself outside a closed shop. I have no idea what day it is—haven't known for 10 months.

I have moved to a different city to provide child care so my daughter can work.

Everything that I observe these days is from a toddler's(学步儿童的)eye view. I must be experiencing time and place in a way I haven't done since before I had memories. I am impressed by what matters to this child at any given moment.

My job is to wait and watch. Let her try things, soothe her when she falls down, keep her safe. Bring snacks, push her on a swing, but mostly let her be. Tell her the names of all the things she points to. Take her hand when she offers it because she is in slightly unfamiliar areas.

The two of us never hurry. This lifestyle change astonishes me every day. There are no play groups, no library story times, no swimming classes. No other children at all, except from a distance at the playground.

In March 2020, I lost my younger daughter. I can't say it was entirely unexpected. My younger daughter battled mental illness. She was only 27 years old. She put herself through long treatment programs and hours of therapy in pursuit of pain relief.

In March, it was as if the whole world went on leave with me. I had company for a few brief days after my younger daughter's death, and then I was alone. I had long phone conversations and watched my granddaughter play every day through a tablet. I signed up for the various things that might help my suffering.

It was the physical isolation(隔离)that was unbearable. I went 15 weeks without touching another person. Now a very small girl waits for me, watches me, soothes me, keeps me safe, and takes my hand.
