Ten years ago, after 2 years as a postdoc(博士后), I found myself wondering whether I should take a different road. Up to that point, I had stuck to a pretty traditional path investigating cancer genetics, but I was losing interest in the research. At the same time, federal funding had flattened, which added to my dissatisfaction.
As I was considering my options, I found inspiration in my first graduate school research tutor, whose work reminded me that scientists’ efforts away from the bench can be incredibly powerful. But I still didn’t know exactly what I should do.
Looking back at these 10 years, I realize how much my work on this campus has helped me grow, both as an academic and a tutor. I’m grateful that I stepped away from a traditional career path and found a way to serve both the student and research communities in my own way, modest though it may be.
A.However, my work has its challenges. |
B.Then a second bit of inspiration came my way. |
C.Distressed as I was, I resolved to pursue my interest in research. |
D.Besides the spiritual reward, there are other less apparent benefits. |
E.So I decided to leave the academic path to find a better match. |
F.Here, at last, was a way to combine my interest in science with my passion for teaching. |
There is nothing ordinary about this little boy's adorable experience with his musical heroes.5-year-old Taylor Hooper was just one of the 35,0000 people who were attending the Foo Fighters concert in Belfast, Norther Ireland last week. Not only is the American rock group his favorite band, it was also his first ever concert.
Taylor's mother, Nikki Hooper, says that she and her husband have always been huge fans of the Foo Fighters. In addition to traveling far and wide to see their shows, they even named their son after the drummer, Taylor Hawkins. So when the band played in their home city, they decided it was finally time for their son to see their beloved rock and rockers in concert.
“He's been listening to them since he was born — mainly because his dad and I are super fans.” Mrs Hooper told BBC. “We called the event organizers and they said it would be no problem, but that we should know it would be a loud music event, so we got Taylor some special headphones. When we got there everyone was so welcoming to him.”
Throughout the show, the audience continuously made Taylor and his parents move closer to the stage. Furthermore, Mrs. Hooper helped her son stand out from the crowd by making him a sign that said he was a 5-year-old attending his first concert.
When Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl finally saw the sign and read it aloud into the microphone, the crowd began chanting for them to bring the youngster onto the stage. That's exactly what he did. When the stage managers brought the boy to the stage, Grohl asked Taylor to show the crowd how to dance.
The small boy then danced to the whole song, making him an “Inter net wonder”. Taylor didn't just walk away from the show with memories, either;the band also invited him backstage to give him a number of gifts, including a pair of Taylor Hawkins's drumsticks.

Everyone has a different path through education. While some get through college right after high school, others find their way back years later. This was the case for Minnie Payne. The South Carolina native returned to the classroom after retiring at age 68, finally earning her desired undergraduate degree when she was 73. Instead of stopping there, Payne continued her higher education path at University of Northern Texas (UNT) and, at age 90, has become the oldest person to receive a master’s degree at the school.
Payne will be accompanied across the stage by her grandson to receive her well-earned diploma (毕业文凭). Although much older than the other students, she was deeply inspired to learn something new and achieve her dream. “It’s never too late to learn and Minnie Payne is making history,” writes UNT. “As the eldest UNT graduate to complete her coursework, Minnie Payne’s passion for writing and her positive attitude made college a joy rather than an obligation (义务).”
Before reaching her ultimate goal, Payne worked as a court reporter and a substitute teacher in a community in South Carolina. After retiring, she was admitted to college at Texas Woman’s University (TWU). A few years later, Payne graduated with a bachelor’s in General Studies. Now a nonagenarian (90多岁的人), the self-described “lifelong learner” has earned a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Payne already has a new job lined up in Houston after she graduates. She will be working at a magazine that is based in the area. “It’s not my intention to stop work.” she said. “I always wanted to improve myself. When I retired at age 68, I wasn’t doing anything constructive. And it’s my philosophy to constantly be doing something constructive.” We wish Payne the best of luck in her new career.
