My mother is a crime fiction（侦探小说）lover and，when I was having trouble learning to read, we’d sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.
Cryptonomicon

This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I’d long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson’s technique (手法）of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.
A Visit from the Goon Squad

Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, “I’ve done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves.”

Ding Dong Ding Dong is created by Chinese company LingLong. It was released in 2016 and has a height of 9.5 inches and has a square base. The device is capable of reading the news, weather updates, and online shopping. Versions are available that speak either Mandarin or Cantonese. |
Mi AI The Mi AI Speaker, developed by Xiao Mi, will wake you up in the morning, read off your schedule, take notes and tell you about the weather. It can control other Mi Home devices such as the Mi Kettle, lights, and rice cooker. What’s more, you can even have it serve as a tutor for your kids, but it can only follow the command in Chinese. |
Amazon Echo Amazon Echo is developed by Amazon, com. The device connects with the voice- controlled intelligent assistant service Alexa. The device is capable of voice interaction (in English, French, Chinese), music playback, setting alarms, and providing weather, traffic and other real-time information. It can also control several smart devices acting as a home automation system. The interesting function is that the latest version can order milk or other food materials on Amazon.com. |

All comics fans, artists, and storytellers: You are invited to enter San Jose Public Library’s Graphic Novel Making Contest for all ages.
Submission Guidelines
● Create your own graphic novel with a maximum length of 8 pages.
● Each submission must be the creative and original work of the submitting author / illustrator.
● Computer generated images are acceptable as long as they are your original work.
● Entries are encouraged to be submitted digitally by emailing to graphicnovels@sjlibrary.org (as a PNG, JPEG, or PDF attachment). Digital entries can be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on July 31, 2022.
● Entries can also be submitted to any operating San José Public Library location no later than the end of the business day on July 31, 2022.
Age Groups and Prizes
● Children (0 — 9) & Pre-Teens (10 — 12): Gift and art supply baskets awarded for first, second, and third place winners of each group. Art supply pouches (小袋子) for two honorable mention winners of each group.
● Teens (13 — 17): First place $100; second place $75; third place $50. Art supply pouches for two honorable mention winners.

Best Spring Destinations In Tibet
Peach blossom valley, Nyingchi
The peach blossoms in Nyingchi, Tibet autonomous region have been dubbed as “the most beautiful peach flowers in the world”. The annual Nyingchi peach blossom festival has become a signature tourism event on the plateau. The peach blossom valley stretches for 30 kilometers, making it one of the longest in China.
Nanyi Valley
Nanyigou scenic spot is 20 kilometers away from Milin county and is an important birthplace of the mysterious Tibetan medicine culture. The scenic area covers a total area of 820 hectares. The ecological conditions here are so good that the place is rich in various animal and plant species. Surrounded by mountains, Nanyi Valley is an ideal spring destination for visitors, where you can find peach and azalea blossoms everywhere.
The Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon
The Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon is the deepest canyon in the world. With a total length of about 500 kilometers, its altitude spans from 7,782 meters at NamchakBarwa, the highest peak of the eastern Himalayas, to 550 meters around the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley. One unique feature of the spring sight here is that visitors can enjoy both the peach blossoms and the snow-capped mountains at the same time.
Lulang Scenic Zone
Lulang Scenic Zone, located in Lulang town, covers a land area of 859, 000 square meters with artificial lakes. The scenic zone contains rich natural scenery, including forest-cladmountains, flowers, lakes and beautiful landscapes, with snowy mountains seen in the far background. Every year from April to June, with wild flowers blossoming alongside the meandering (蜿蜒的) streams and snowy mountains towering in the backdrop, the whole landscape presents a peaceful and pleasant sight.
